Not sure the appeal of Mark Gottfried. He essentially got fired from his last 2 jobs.

Moton seems like a good one.

I don't fully understand ECU fans obsession with Dooley. Seems like a decent choice but the 4 years he was coach at ECU we still werent very good. I mean I guess for ECU standards we were but that is a really low bar

Dooley didn't actually "fail" at ECU. Hammy made a foolish decision to fire him and he's only improved as a coach since then. Got 10 years of experience as an assistant at Kansas, where he was a part of a national title, and now has added more HC experience and gone to a couple of NCAA tournaments. The reason I like him better than Moton (who I'd still be very happy with BTW) is because Moton has only coached at 1 school. He played at Central, was an assistant at Central, and then been the HC at Central. He has no experience recruiting at the level we are going to have to recruit at to get to the upper level of the AAC. I suspect with his personality and work ethic he'd adjust and do fine, but it's a risk.

For the record I am not against Dooley. I just look at his body of work compared to a guy like Crean, or even Moton, and they don't really compare to me. He had 4 years at ECU and we had moderate success at best. Look at year 4 for a guy like Crean or Moton.

Crean took the team at marquette after taking over a rubish team and they improved the following years
In year 4, at Marquette, Crean went to the final 4!

Crean took over a bad Indiana Team in year 1, they improved the following years and in year 4 they went to the Sweet 16.

Moton took over a terrible NCCU team in year 1 and improved every year. In year 4 they went 22-9 (15-1), the following year they went to their first ever NCCA tourney

Joe Dooley took over an okay ECU team in year 1, and went the opposite direction. Whether or not he should have been fired, IDK, but he was trending down after his second season.

Basketball is one of those sports where it doeskin take 3 years for the freshman to contribute. Dooley just doesn't seem like the best candidate. No to Gottfriend I don't get that hire

Crean took over a team at Indiana that literally had only "two walk-ons who had scored a combined 36 points in their careers." In 4 seasons he went from 6 wins to 10, 12, 27. Of course it was at Indiana.
He would be the slam dunk.

I'm not sure I share the enthusiasm for Dooley - failed once at ECU, inherited a sweet deal at FGCU and has generally met but not exceeded expectations there. It would probably take quite a package for him to entertain the thought in light of prior history - why not go get an up and comer rather than a retread?

Dooley almost took the job when Lebo did a few years ago. His parents live in the area and wants to move back close to them. If we want him he will come but shouldn’t be #1. Crean reached out to us so make him say no.

Crean
Dooley
Mike Davis
Molton
Gottfried
In that order

If Crean is legitimately interested he has to be at the top. I think he just has his people reaching out to any potential opening right now though. Some other names I haven't really seen mentioned are Steve Forbes at ETSU, Pat Kelsey at Winthrop, John Becker from Vermont, maybe even Mitch Henderson from Princeton.

There's no doubt if I'm in charge of this search I use the time while the season is going on to figure out if Crean is serious and make him a serious offer. I suspect it's the same thing you do, but put the ball in his court while you can't really talk to anyone else. Better to fully vet this out now than to wait around, because IMO if he'll take the job ECU would be out of their minds not to hire him.

Tubby Smith is from Maryland so the eastern part of NC is closer to home than west Tennessee is. He would be a great fit. He'd be like an older, wiser Lebo. Plus, over the last 1 1/2 years here, he's gotten used to coaching in front of 1500 people.

Gottfried would be freaking hilarious. The guy is Lebo 2.0 with a slightly more successful stint in the state of Alabama. Forbes is a pipe dream. Dooley is a pipe dream unless he has some sort of lasting connection to ECU. Don't make it difficult. Don't hire a firm (too late). Take the easy and correct road and hire Moton.

I'm no Gottfried honk, but you really need to look at the resumes of him and Lebo before you think they are even in the same ballpark. In Gottfried's 20 years as a D1 HC he's been to the NCAA tournament 11 times, the Sweet 16 3 times, and the Elite 8 1 time. Lebo in 20 years as a D1 coach has 0 NCAA tournament appearances and a grand total of 2 NIT appearances. Their resumes aren't even comparable. I'd prefer Moton over him, but he'd be a gigantic improvement from Lebo in every way.

Imagine how much you have to go down the pooper to get fired from schools that you brought an Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteens. The 2.0 version usually is an improvement in every way but he’s still not good.

Ollie’s resume is always going to look good but he still sucks.

If Crean is really interested and ECU has the cash then that is an easy call. The problem is that ECU is probably going to be outbid for him unless they do the deal soon. USF, UConn and Memphis will probably all be in the market for him too.

Moton or Dooley would be really good hires, because both know the area. I am not sure whey Dooley backed out last time, which in turn made ECU hire Lebo but if he wants to be at ECU then the coaching search shouldn't go past him and Moton.

USF isn't going to be in the market. Gregory is in his 1st year.

Indiana is a Top 10 program. UCONN is a Top 10 program. Crean failed at Indiana (which landed better recruits than UCONN). What has changed for him to perform any better at UCONN?

The Hurley bros should be primary targets.

I wouldn't say Crean "failed" at Indiana. If you take out his 1st 3 years where he was rebuilding the program from the bedrock level he went 138-69 won the big 10 twice and went to the sweet 16 three times. Doesn't look or smell like failure unless your expectations are unreasonable like Indiana's were.

Crean may not be the right fit for UConn, but he's a good coach.

Spoiler alert: UCONN are going to be disappointed with whoever replaces Ollie.

I agree. The one of the Hurley brothers will be a great hire for Connecticut.

I agree that he is a good coach, just not for UCONN. Most of the UCONN fanbase would rather stick with Ollie than trade for Crean. That's a lateral coaching move.

UCONN and ECU will not be in the market for the same candidate.
