Its' dumb. The end of the NFL season and the playoffs are when they get the most viewership. XFL won't get those eyes if directly competing. Also, no time to offer college players who have just finished their college careers and have no NFL shot.

I agree with others that the league needs to operate in the spring/summer to be successful.

I think Birmingham is a safe bet. As well as San Diego and St Louis with them not have NFL teams anymore.

My Guess:

West

San Antonio
Oklahoma City
Salt Lake or Honolulu

East
Orlando
Memphis
St Louis
Birmingham

I doubt this would have any impact on UTSA or UAB but if the XFL does somewhat succeed does that affect UTSA/UAB's bottom line because now you're competing for entertainment $$$ from fans. I realize each school has their core base but as far as trying to attract new fans, would this throw a kink into those plans? Not stirring the pot here, honest question

Not a UAB or UTSA guy (though I guess Norfolk is a possible landing spot for a team), but I don't think it'd make that much of a difference. The XFL is playing in the winter and won't compete directly against college football. Unless there's fans out there that have a immutable yearly football budget that would force them to choose between a Birmingham Crowdsourced Nicknames game and a UAB one, I suspect that current and prospective college football won't be affected by the XFL team that much.

Being from San Antonio, I would support XFL football in SA. Heck, I would probably buy season tickets. My appreciation for the NFL has been waning for several years and the officials of San Antonio have already exhausted every option to get a NFL team unsuccessfully. San Antonio would fully support pro football in any form.

So just make January/February the XFL's preseason (that nobody watches anyway) and then start the regular season after the Super Bowl when football fever is at its peak.

Columbus, OH, I'm not sure If Columbus will be high on the potential site list because Cleveland is only like 140 miles north of Columbus and Pittsburg is about 170 miles north /west. Many of those Clevelanders have been long term fans of both of those teams.. Certainly that area of Ohio has very strong entrench support for the Browns and it may be difficult to build new ground support for a 3rd Pro football team in that region of Ohio. There are only so many sports fans that would be interested and more likely those avid sports/football fans already pay big money to support the Browns. I'm sure many have followed those two teams for year.

RE: OT: XFL making a return
If I was looking to plant XFL teams in cities, I would find places with college or soccer stadiums that seat around 30k. No need to have 50k+ capacity when your crowds will probably be consistently around 20k.

1. Columbus, OH. Big market that has a 20k capacity MLS stadium. Great chance you could fill it consistently

2. Birmingham, AL. Gotta have a team in the South. If UAB gets it's new stadium it'll be a perfect fit.

3. Oklahoma City, OK. Your only spring and summer competition is a AAA baseball team and the Thunder if they make the playoffs. Can always shift the team to Tulsa and play at Tulsa's stadium if there's not a good location in OKC.

4. Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, BC. Lumping them together cause they both have MLS stadiums. Gives you a Northwest presence and the areas seem to support niche sports like soccer.

5. Los Angeles, CA or San Diego, CA. Have to have a SoCal team. I'm sure there's plenty of sites to host a team but StubHub Center would be perfect.

6. New York City, NY. Just like SoCal, you have to have a presence there. Plenty of spots to host a team and tons of potential fans

7. Salt Lake City, UT. Another city, another MLS stadium. Provides the Rocky Mountains with a team to support. If they can support the Jazz, they can support a football team.

8. Louisville, KY. Would provide a nice close rival for the Birmingham and Columbus teams. Only a AAA baseball team and Louisville's baseball team to compete with. Could play at Papa John's stadium but it's probably a little bigger than you'd want for a new league.

9. Orlando, FL. Checks the box for a MLS stadium. Only concern is that there might be too much going on to keep people's interest and summer weather would make night games a necessity.

10. Memphis, TN. Gives you another team in the South and bridges a gap between Birmingham, OKC, and Louisville. Liberty Bowl would be a little big but would give you a football ready home.

I think the major choices the league has to make is if it wants to be spread throughout the country or more centered in a particular region. If it was more regionalized and anchored in the Midwest or the South, I think there would be a chance to develop rivalries and interest.

My guess:

I would imagine all of the below have potential.

1). San Diego #17 (3,317,749)
is the #17th largest Metro Market without a NFL team, currently. SDCCU Stadium 70,561 Capacity

2) St. Louis, MO-IL #20 2,807,002 The Dome at America's Center Capacity 70,000

3). San Antonio #24th (2,429,609) currently HOME to the the UTSA Roadrunners Stadium Alamodome 65,000 Capacity

4). Sacramento #27th (2,296,418) They have a stadium that is used as follows - Sacramento Hornet Stadium only has a Capacity of 21,195-seat college football and track stadium on the campus of California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State) in Sacramento, California.

5). Austin, TX #31 (2,056,405) Metro Markets - University of Texas at Austin Longhorns football team capacity of 100,119

6). San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA #35 (1,978,816) Stadium: San Jose State University CEFCU Stadium, known as Spartan Stadium Capacity 30,456

7). Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News #37 (1,726,907) Market Size. Forman Field 20,000 or NSU Stadium 30,000

8). Milwaukee, WI #39 Market Size (1,572,482) Possibly Miller Park Capacity: 41,900

Would make far more sense to look at Spectrum or OCSC, 66k seats is far too large.

But then it's the XFL, so I suppose looking for "sense" is a fool's errand.

last time the XFL set up massive platforms in the stadium endzones for fireworks and video boards...if they do that again, it will greatly reduce the stadium capacities.

RE: OT: XFL making a return
Vince should drop the XFL and go with USFL. Go with eight USA teams to start with. San Diego, Salt Lake, St Louis, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, NYC Area Brookland/Newark, Louisville & Orlando.

He should use the Canadian Football rules & monetary pay scale. Play the CFL schedule. And the USFL Champion plays the Canadian Grey Cup Champions for the North American Championship. The Championship game should be played the second week end of December

He should appeal for the same tax benefits the NFL receives. They should try to get a contract with Fox first, if that does not work they should try Trinity Broadcast Channel, OAN (One American News) channel or Max News Channel. Their commentators must be politics free. These channels are already on Direct TV and other outlets.

They should immediately lock up Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-A, Ace Hardware , SouthWest Airlines & major oil companies As major advertisers

And most of all they and their players should stay out of politics.

What's truly funny about this, is the people so outraged by the NFL, pleading for this sort of league are largely the same people so fond of the term "snowflake". This definitely sounds like Tomi Lahren's idea of a football league(maybe she could be commissioner?), but if watching a football league made up of some 300 guys who can't make the Browns is tolerable to you if it means no politics, more power to you I suppose.

As for Home Depot, considering co-founder Arthur Blank owns the Atlanta Falcons, you can probably scratch that one off the list.

Fox is also not happening and while any of those other networks make far more sense, It seems almost certain that the XFL will rely heavily on streaming.

One things is for sure I'm not watching a bunch of over paid thugs spit on my nation's flag. Those days are over. That's why they've lost the two season tickets in my home.

Silent protest, whether or not you agree with it, does not make someone a "thug". Nor are they "spitting" on the flag.
