All realignment discussions have stopped
There was another meeting at Davos that went unnoticed by the sports entertainment media. A group of P5/G5 conference commissioners and select university presidents got together to discuss realignment. They decided that they want the status quo as of now due to the fact that any further movement can (will) destabilize the entire college athletics product - and the markets for this type of entertainment.

Take a look to your left and then to your right. The schools that you are rubbing elbows with will be your running buddies from now on until the next 100 years or so - give or take. If you like your conference, you get to keep your conference...unless your school chooses to quit the conference. However, even quitting may not be in the cards - contracts and all that...

I'm thinking there is a reason this "meeting" went unnoticed.

I'm thinking someone hacked miko's account. This fell flat by his standards. Disappointed. 01-lucy

Now let's be honest.

If a meeting of this magnitude was held and a decision of this level was reached, it would have been headline news on EVERY major sports site PLUS Twitter would have blown up.

I call BS.

Isn't it funny how a lot of G5 fans would love to be in the AAC, but seemingly all AAC fans want is to be out of the conference? 07-coffee3

That's quite interrelated Miko 33. Davos hasn't even determined whether Bitcoin is real yet. The networks can't pay for added expansion until Bitcoin is legitimized. The equity markets are overheated, the dollar is being kept low as the WRC so that the US debt can still prop up trade in Europe so all available cash has to be kept in Wall Street and the ECM. Since Disney now holds a stake in China it is necessary that they not be seen propping up either the FED or the ECM. So if they want to pay for more movement in College Football Bitcoin is the only secretive way to make this play. Otherwise the World Economy could be plunged into chaos should a more overt Disney move be interpreted incorrectly by Beijing.

So of course there is no talk of it at Davos! Sheesh! I thought you of all posters would know this. If Bitcoin gains more traction look for an announcement coming out of Austin and Norman to follow.

RE: All realignment discussions have stopped
Wouldn't Tulsa be the Davos for college realignment?

I have a source that says, after canvassing all the Comfort Inns, Days Inns, Ramadas, La Quinta Inns, and Best Westerns, in the greater Tulsa Oklahoma area for the past 4 months, there has been zero suspicious activity of clandestine collegiate officials, planning future conference realignment.

So ... I think the original post is probably accurate. There will be no additional conference shuffling in the foreseeable future. Specifically, I think it is safe to say that the conferences you see today, you will still see in the next year, and the year after that.

Unless ... of course ... Tulsa ISN'T the Davos of collegiate conference realignment. And Wichita really is. Or Spokane. Or Scranton PA.

You know who this favors...the G5.

AAC is allowed to continue to develop. They sign a bigger TV contract and continue to be a challenger conference. This places pressure on the postseason system to broaden its access.

If instead B12 were to grab Houston, UC, Memphis, Colorado St for 14 that lessens the leverage the AAC would have in negotiating for a contract bowl.

B12 (Colorado St, Houston, Memphis, UC)
MWC (UTEP)
AAC (ODU)

The G5 then would all be 10-12 team conferences for revenue maximization BUT would have less of an argument for greater access.

If the G5 alignments stick tight as Miko is saying and with the bowls hurt by the CFP there is a strong case for CFP expansion down the road.

If you're not realigning for money you'll have to do it with an improved post season, something that will benefit the G5.

I know this is satire, but he's kind of right in one respect.

The poaching is pretty much done until the new CFP and TV deals come out. You might see a team drop out or down, but you're not going to see mass movement till then.

There probably won't be any G5 teams getting called up to a P5 league in the next couple of years.

Basically, the MWC is full (and has NMSU in a pinch if Hawaii decides to drop down), CUSA is beyond full (and might just do nothing if an open slot develops), the MAC is full and stable, and even the Belt is pretty much stable at this point. There are currently 5 G5 independents, and they aren't forming a conference anytime soon.

Perhaps if JMU wanted to move up, the Belt *might* take them and NMSU. But I just don't see it happening.

There are plenty of unhappy teams in FBS, but conference rules and agreements pretty much make a divide up all the teams in SBC and CUSA into some other arrangement really difficult.

----

Part of this is money driven. So long as the P5 isn't expanding, the AAC won't be expanding. And no other move within the G5 really is going to much besides cost you an exit fee.

He's not pointing to the same old opinion that everyone has that blah, blah, blah once the contracts are open then all hell breaks loose.

What he's saying is the commissioners are worried that if they try to play musical chairs again they might not have a seat.

They go open market with a few more schools in tow and find there is no market. No market because at 18 schools there starts to become questions as to what those bottom 8-10 schools bring to the table.

The B1G and SEC went in on major land grant properties when expanding. Institutions made of the same substance they already had to answer the quality argument.

This is aimed more about going to 16 or 18. It doesn't really point to the B12 getting back to 12 or 14. I think we all know there are some quality pieces for that. Also that doesn't prevent a USC or Florida State from going Independent to strike a better monetary deal for themselves.

Its the P4 which is what is off the table. There needs to be a least 5 power conferences to maintain control. Get too greedy and watch the system collapse.

Well, what was started as a good humorous thread was hijacked like every other around here to become an AAC thread. What that means is that I'm going to have to start "exporting" AAC trolls from this board when they don't keep their AAC stuff in appropriate threads.

I tend to buy this as anymore than 14 teams in a conference over saturates. There are too many mouths to feed, too many needs and demands, plus more bottom feeders. Also, much harder to determine a champ.

Which is why conferences are gonna start splitting left and right, no pun intended. Why any conference would go beyond 12 is beyond me.

I wonder how many would have gone past 10 if there hadn't been a requirement for 12 to have a CCG?
