Just like all music, about 5% is in the good to great spectrum and the rest is awful.

We(I include myself in this) think that 90-early 200s rap/music was better because we've forgotten almost all of that awful 95% and only remember that great 5%.

Its interesting listening (for us old people) to the 70s on 7 or 80s on 8 when they play Kasey Kasem's top 40 from the week of February 10th, 19XX. There will be songs you have completely forgotten. Some of the weeks make you realize why disco appeared. The music at the time was so bad they would try anything different.

But this was the top 40 and still had songs you had completely forgotten about. There was a lot that never made top 40, the 95%.

You can listen to those old Top 40 shows at any time on the iHeart Radio app but yeah there are a lot of shows where I'm wondering how the hell THAT song made the top 5 and often have no memory of some top 40 songs I know I would have heard listening to the show orginally.

The one I had and wore out had "Hit a muthafocker". Used to listen to it before football games my senior year. By that time it was old ha.

Well I question the claim with, "What radio stations play rap?" My son, "Not many. But nobody listens to the radio anymore."

I could have questioned the claim about the relationship between poetry and rap...but that's another topic.

There is what rap is/was and there is what rap is now. Two different things. The marketers got to rap music in the late 90s and early 00s and basically weaned out all the socially conscious or at least discussing real issues/reality and started pumping up club/thug rap to make more money. Now all someone needs to do to be hot is drop curse words and n* bombs all over the track.

Trust me when I saw just about every other music has taken it on the chin too.

I've found so little NEW stuff over the last 15 years that I like that I basically started working backwards into older metal, rap, and what not to find good stuff. Just about all the new stuff is so cookie cutter in every genre that you can't tell who is a sell out and who isn't anymore.

I'd also blame digital distribution as part of the problem too. Its easier to be a one hit wonder. Digital compression makes the new stuff sound bad on good stereos. But with cell phones and earbuds most people don't notice the sound quality that they are missing. And yes, I am that guy that put some money into his home and car stereo systems because when I want to listen to music I want it to sound right and sound good---good tunes on crappy gear just infuriate me to no end. And then seeing people turn their car stereos up louder with poor quality source material on crappier amps and speakers just makes my skin curl. Not to say you gotta have a ultra expensive system but damn...

My son claims all the rap groups lose it when they get commercially successful. Nobody at the top is any good is his opinion.

I definitely agree with you about music in general. It has been American Idoled (not that I have anything against that show or the Voice). I don't have anything against Justin Timberlake, but he's so vanilla and so boring. The producers know what works and they stick to it. You rarely hear someone unique like Prince or Fleetwood Mac or ELO were.

We're seeing a loss of individuality all over the place. Take car companies today. A generation ago these companies had vehicle lineups that were very unique and distinctive for almost every make and model. Today, the distinction is much less apparent. You can still tell the difference between a Silverado, F150 and Ram trucks. However, if you find took the mid sized crossover vehicles made by all the auto companies today and removed the names and emblems - you would be very hard pressed to figure out which companies manufactured these vehicles.

Sorry for the hijack, but it illustrates how we are converging on standardized metrics across multiple areas of life.

That first statement sounds like youthful rebellion comments. Kind of like the hot topic back in the day was Metallica sold out when they made a video for One. Jay Z really has kind of fallen off after The Black Album... ect... Back around to the youthful rebellion comment though...everyone is cool until you find out other people think so LOL.

I don't even know what Country is anymore. I mean, when I hear what gets called Country now I hear rock music with a southern voiced lead singer--not necessarily Country music. That said, I am not the biggest Country music fan but if I heard something that sounded good to me I wouldn't change the channel.

Rap used to be about telling story to the listener or paving a path with words, it was an art form really in my opinion. Now people my age just want to get lit and have fun. While there are still artists that have actual talent out there like Logic, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem plus a few more.. I guess my generation just wants something that sounds cool and fun. Not something that makes any sense lyrically.
