Florida State is recovering nicely -- moved up to 10th already.

Clemson and Miami continue to scoop up blue chip players, and VT grabbed another 4-star LB as well.

No ACC team worse than 65th - good, since there are 65 teams in the P5.

Georgia putting together a MONSTER class.

Good valid point, but I am not happy with Bobby Petrino's recruiting. 07-coffee3

So far I REALLY like this new 2 signing day thing. I think it has benefited some ACC teams, not really hurt any of them, but it probably did take a few folks that Alabama would've gotten in the past and spread them around a bit.

Only thing Taggart couldn't get was a QB. Naturally, Jimbo flipped the one FSU was after over the last month, and his absentee act in Tallahassee last fall left the rest going elsewhere in December. They'll undoubtedly have to sign two next year.

Still waiting for 4* WR Manuel Allen (Cal) to sign. 8 of the 19 signed in December are already on campus.

With the signing of WR Justyn Ross Clemson has secured the top ranked player on 24/7 from six different states: SC, NC, GA, FL, OH, and AL.

The most important thing is nine of our seventeen signees this class are already enrolled in school and are full participants in off season drills and will get the benefit of spring practice.

This is an overall comment, not Clemson specific. Is it almost standard that a good majority of Top 500 recruits graduate HS in 3.5 years now? Incoming guys being coming on campus in January and being spring practice participants didn't seem to be a big trend even a few years ago, but now seems to be more common than not.

Was I oblivious or is this a recent trend?

It's a recent trend for so many to do it, but it's been going on since the early 90's. Eric Zeier was an early enrollee at Georgia.

Louisville adds 4-star CB Jairus Brents from Waggener HS in Louisville, Ky to the 2018 signing class. Huge late pickup for the Cardinals.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cardchr...louisville

According to 247 Sports’ composite rankings, Brents is the 24th-best cornerback in the class of 2018 and the 230th best overall prospect in the country. He had not included Louisville as a finalist during any portion of his recruitment, but ultimately chose U of L over West Virginia, Florida State and Cincinnati, among others.

Adding Brents:

Jairus Brents | CB | 5-10 | 176 | Louisville, Ky. | Waggener
Played for Jordan Johnson at Waggener High ... the highest-rated player in the 2018 class ... four-star recruit according to 247Sports.com ... ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 3 player in the state and the nation's No. 48 cornerback ... recorded 62 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions during his senior season ... also played multiple spots on offense, passing for 972 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushing for 481 yards ... finished the season with 15 TDs (eight rushing, two receiving, two kickoff returns, two punt returns and one interception return) and scored on 13 two-point conversion runs ... was a first-team Courier Journal All-State selection and was among 11 finalists for Kentucky's Mr. Football award ... five-time state champion in track and field ... won state titles in the 55-meters, 100-meters, 200-meters, 400-meters and long jump ... missed most of his junior season with an ankle sprain ... chose Louisville over offers from Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Southern California and Wisconsin.

not intended as gloating, but
Coach Swinney has built a juggernaut. Pulling a 5-star out of the state of Alabama is darn near impossible, especially when he's the #1 player in the state (Ross). Swinney also got the #1 player in Ohio (Carman), Georgia (Lawrence), Florida (Xavier Thomas), NC (Kendrick), and SC (KJ Henry). Unbelievable.

Looking at the class is strangely reminiscent of the 2016 National Championship team.

Elite QB Lawrence broke all of Deshaun Watson's HS records.
TE Galloway (6-5, 225) looks a lot like Jordan Leggett.
WR Ross reminds people of Mike Williams.
Elite DLs KJ Henry and Xavier Thomas to fill the shoes of Wilkins, Bryant, and Ferrell

Same recipe. Spot the ball!

Excited about the class. Would have liked to have seen one more OL and probably one more DL since we are definitely losing 3/4 and probably all of our starting DL next year but I'm not complaining.

When you look at a list of the schools that snagged the most 4 and 5 star recruits, it would appear that there won't be any major changes to the pecking order. What is mildly surprising to me is that for the first time in more than five years, Alabama isn't the clear winner. They still have an excellent class, but Georgia seems to have closed a lot of ground. It's good for the SEC, IMO, to have a serious foil to Bama in the SEC East.

Now, can Herman coach up that small army of blue chippers he signed? If so, Texas could be back as a contender sooner rather than later. As much as I am prone to enjoy seeing their huge egos deflated, I think it's good for college football as a whole when they are good.

IMO the reason for Bama's drop this year is the sheer amount of coaching attrition they have had the past few years. Just in this recruiting cycle alone an offensive player would have been recruited by four different people with the title of Offensive Coordinator. Defensive coordinator is only slightly better.

I wouldn't be too quick to call this a trend.

Cuse had their best class in over a decade. With the new rules...there are no academic reaches whom we find out didn't qualify like in the past. Several players have 4 stars from various rating services. They also have two 4 star transfers coming in. Two kids were not allowed to sign and will be TBD. Lost one four star decommit after an undisclosed issue and lost a last minute bid for a 4 star RB with Pitt.

This class is expected to mostly redshirt to mature the overall team. I only expect a few guys to break through into playing this Fall.

RE: NSD 18
Some thoughts on Georgia Tech's 2018 signing class:

Great overall signing class, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Losing DE Welschof to Michigan hurt a little bit, but hopefully flipping Jordan Domineck from USF is a steal. Either way, since we're transitioning our defense to a 3-4, it's not as imperative to fill that spot as it once was so Domineck will at least help with depth if he is not a steal. Also losing C'Bo to Notre Dame will not hurt as Christian Malloy's style reminds Coach Johnson and his staff of Dedrick Mills.

The big prize from that early period: Flipping and signing of 4-star QB/ATH James Graham. (flipped from Virginia Tech)
The big prize from that NSD: Signing former LSU commit 3-star DL JaQuon Griffin

The big Loss from early period: German DE Welschof to Michigan after commiting to Georgia Tech
The big Loss from NSD: RB C'Bo Flipped to Notre Dame

Surprise of the Class: Transfer from OLE Miss OL - Jack DeFoor at 6'5" 305lbs He's already one of the biggest OL on the team. He will have three years of eligibilty, however he is part of a lawsuit against OLE Miss and may have to sit this year.

Overall grade of the signing class: A-. I rank it as 2nd best in the CPJ era, behind only last year's 2017 class. Offensive rating: B-. Defensive rating: A.

Here's the updated recruiting board:
Total: 22 (21 signed, 1 transfer)
Total Available Scholarships for 2018 Class: 22

QB/ATH: 2 (2 signed)
BB: 1 (1 signed)
AB: 3 (3 signed)
WR: 2 (2 signed)
OL: 4 (3 signed, 1 transfer)
DE: 2 (3 signed)
DT: 2 (2 signed)
LB: 2 (2 signed)
CB: 2 (2 signed)
S: 1 (1 signed)

Finally, here are the star ratings of the players in this class & Overall rankings of this class by 247, Rivals & ESPN:
247 Rankings: Natl Rank: 52 ACC Rank: 10 Avg Rating: 0.8476
Rivals: Natl Rank: 52 ACC Rank: 9
ESPN: Natl Rank: 53

2018 ACC Recruiting & National Signing Day Class Rankings
By: Pete Fiutak

How did the ACC teams stack up with their respective recruiting classes? Who had the strongest-looking haul of talent, and who struggled a bit?

Some food for thought on ratings and rankings.

Clemson finished with 6 guys rated 5*.
Notre Dame finished with 0 guys rated 5*.

Clemson finished a hair ahead of Notre Dame in the rankings, with 2444 points compared to 2380.

The clear difference is 17 commits for Clemson compared to 27 commits to Notre Dame. Notre Dame got to drop 7 of their lowest guys from the formula, while Clemson left 3 slots 'on the table' as it applies to rankings in Rivals.

Georgia Tech finished #10 nationally in teams whose recruiting class was the same size as us or smaller.

ND signed a pretty good class, with 27 players signed from 15 different states.

The class was ranked # 9 by ESPN, #10 by both 24/7 and USA Today and #11 by Rivals.

(Clemson had a hell of a class and is ranked ahead of ND by all recruiting services).
