Ok, let get a few my issues out of the way first. #1, as a 80s kid I loved the G1 cartoon and had the toys. I think the building blocks are there for doing this as a live action movie, however in hindsight, some of the canon told out of the G1 cartoon is a little convoluted and arguably not that clear. #2, where I think Bay messed up with the franchise was trying too hard to fit in a love story in the first 3 along with some really poor attempts at comic relief. #3 The Dinobots were one of the coolest things in the G1 cartoon but I really don't think their story translates well to a live action movie and the fact that in Extinction they kind of whiffed on how epic they could have been was that movie's downfall. #4, Last Knight, the 5th movie in the current series suffered from what could have been a cool idea in concept and turned it into something that felt kind of haphazard.

*****************
*****************

I don't think the franchise needs a reboot as much as it needs a good movie to be made in the series again. 1, 3, and 4 were all pretty serviceable as movies. 2 messed up a lot of stuff IMO and the 5th one just didn't feel right.

If they do start all the way over from scratch then I think their first play should be based on a skeletal framework around the introduction they started with in the first cartoon: a war for resources on Cybertron leads to both races of robots leaving the planet and heading towards Earth. With that core basis you can get into some cleaner story lines involving the two races of robots creation story, Cybertron / Unicron, and some of those tie ins to the crash on Earth of their ships in prehistoric times and how they would like to play that out...

As it stands, the series needs a break and a new director. Bay's problem is that he can barely tell a story. As you said, 1 is fairly decent with only one or two cringe-worthy moments. The issue is he killed Megatron at the end leaving someone with as little creativity as him, no where to go. Your bolded comment should have been the second movie, where you see how the All-Spark disappears and ends up on Earth along with how its loss destroys Cybertron. The final movie in the trilogy is Megs' rebirth into Galvatron along the arrival of Omicron to Earth.

But lets be honest, the idea of Bay having a mech/femme romance is a thought I don't think any of us want to entertain.

I also agree with you that while cool, there just isn't a good way to work the Dinobots into the story. I felt they created a good narrative for them in the 3D cartoon where the 'Formers land on a primitive Earth, but that is functionally AU.

RE: So, Transformers needs a reboot?
I really enjoyed the first one. Not exactly Academy Award worthy, but a really cool guy movie in my opinion.

I thought the 2nd one sucked. The 3rd one didn't really impress me and I thought the 4th was pointless. In a strange twist of fate, I actually enjoyed The Last Knight although that sort of storyline should have been set up more carefully over a couple of films and been the climax of everything. Obviously, no one in charge of these movies has much of a plan so...

I don't remember enough about the deeper storylines from when I was a kid so I'm not sure where they should go with it.

I do remember a while back there was some talk of a cinematic universe that would be shared by Transformers, GI Joe, and some others...

Hasbro universe?

Found this too...update on Hasbro universe

RE: So, Transformers needs a reboot?
Transformers was by far my favorite cartoon/toy line as a child. I got up at 5am on Saturday mornings to watch it before it made it to the weekly syndicated afternoon spot. It is woven into almost all my childhood Christmas memories. I'll never forget getting my first transformer (Megatron) from my grandma and aunt on Christmas Eve and then waking up to find Jetfire under the tree the next day.

BTW: The Jetfire toy was a rework of an existing Mecha toy in Japan and holy **** was it awesome. Huge and mostly metal. They don't make them like that any more! Playing with its spring loaded, all metal, landing gear would nearly crack your knuckle bones.

I love Transformers.

And that's why I hope they let the current movies just die off.

They literally are only making more at this point because even a bad movie makes hundreds of millions in the Asia market.

I paid good money to see the first movie in IMAX on opening night.
I waited a few days to see the second one. (This one was full of WTF for me)
I waited a month to see the third. (Looked like they might be getting it back on track.........maybe)
I watched the fourth when I found it while channel surfing one Sunday afternoon. (This one killed all my remaining interest)
I have not seen nor have a desire to see the last one they just made.

I'd rather see them do a serious reboot of the cartoon (not the 40 million offshoot Transformers cartoons), ala la Voltron, than see another live action movie come out.

Without watching parts of the G1 cartoon again their story is complicated....

And I honestly don't have these story lines in my freshest of memories but...

Quinessants created Unicron and ____. Unicron for all intents and purposes was evil and _____ got fed up and turned himself into Cybertron.

Then I want to say the Quintessants went to Cybertron and decided to build two races of robots, one of military/police lineage and the other construction/science of which they eventually became the Autobots and Decepticons.

I want to say when the both became aware of their situation they both became allies and kicked the Quintessants off the planet in a rebellion of sorts.

Later on they had a ware between themselves over the resources of the planet to keep them alive which ended up in the Arc and ____ crashing on Earth. When they awoke they started their reign on Earth.

I know that Cube/Transformium came up outside the G1 cartoon series so I am not sure how that fits into everything.

******

You got the whole Starscream and Jetfire angle.

You have the whole Omega Supreme and the Constructicons angle.

You have the whole G1 version of how the Dinobots came to be.

You have the story of the earliest Decepticons, aka Insecticons, landing on earth and not totally buying everything Megatron is selling.

You have the story of Starscream building the Combaticons and if they stayed true to the story there could be some WWII stuff involved as their models were based off abandoned WWII South Pacific military vehicles.

Depending on how you view the Cube tie ins and how the current movies are trending, I'm not sure how the Stunticons/Aerialbots scenario would play out.

*Combaticons, Aerialbots, Stunticons have a interesting way they got their personalities with ____ haviing to grant them yet I want to say the Combaticons had their stolen out of some vault for Cybertronian criminals.

I don't know how well the story line would go in a movie if they made the play for the tale of how the Head and Target Masters got created.

You might could do something interesting with the Dinobots and Predacons. Granted the Predacons could form Predaking and the Dinobots were ultimately 5 individual robots.

I don't know how much Trypticon, Fortress Maximus, Autobot City ... name escapes me... can fit in....

Then you can get into the story lines around the formations of the combiners like Technobots, Protectobots, Terrorcons, and others...

I don't go to any TF forums. I just watched those G1 cartoons so much back in the day that I have most of the key stuff referenced in memory.

I haven't really watched too much of the new stuff..or kept up with it.

Me neither. To me, it is G1 and the toys. Which reminds me, I ought to post some pictures of my collection as soon as I can straighten them up after the cats knocked them all over....

Edit: hand the reigns of the franchise over to Simon Furman and Ronald D. Moore.

Galvatron would take better care of his army 07-coffee3

But yeah, G1 toon and toys were my staple. Even though I would say after the end of S2 and the movie I weaned off on it as a) the later seasons just weren't on around here and easy to find to watch and b) what I saw from my dvd box set it was too much set up like long toy commercials, which unlike the first two seasons it actually felt like there was some good story plot lines to go along with new character introductions. Plus, as far as the toy line was going...some of that stuff was getting a little to out there for me to get into design wise.... Terrorcons? Pretenders? So many combiners. The head/target/power master stuff felt forced to sell toys. The new designs put them a little more futuristic than I was getting into and it wasn't always set on Cybertron.
