Then spots would be open in both conferences and any outliers of each conference could decide if joining the other conference would be better for them.

Just as a hypothetical and not how I think it would actually go down:

BIG12 adds: UCF, USF, Houston, Memphis, Cincy, and Navy

AAC backfills with: UTSA, North Texas, FAU, Arkansas State, Ga State, and ODU

Remaining 10 schools in CUSA: UTEP, Rice, La Tech, USM, UAB, WKU, MT, Marshall, UNCC, FIU

Remaining 8 schools in SBC: TXST, ULM, ULL, South Alabama, Troy, Ga Southern, App, CCU

Marshall, UNCC, MT, and FIU bolt for the SBC while TXST, ULM, and ULL bolt for CUSA.

NMSU joins CUSA to make 10 teams while JMU or Liberty joins the SBC to make 10 teams. Both conferences are then pretty regional.

Again, not how I actually expect it to go down.

If the AAC loses that many you might as well include them in the reorganization.

The SBC and CUSA need to reorganize along geographic lines. If any other Big 12 or AAC openings occur, deal with it then. Until that time, if it ever comes, make both conferences more geographically compatible.

West - SBC

Louisiana, Rice, TX State, UTSA, UTEP, NM State
N. Texas, Ark State, LA Tech, UAB, MTSU, S. Miss

East - CUSA

Marshall, WKU, ODU, Charlotte, App State, GA State
GA Southern, Coastal, FIU, FAU, USA, Troy

Trade UAB & MT for USA & Troy and I'd be fine with that. I don't think it's likely and doubt the cost savings for travel for ODU would really be that great.

The only one I can see Pac-12 taking (due to academic reasons) is Texas. The rest not so much. Then again, everything outside of the Cali schools + UW is eh... There's a few AAU schools, but they're nowhere near the likes of Cali + UW and there's a couple that aren't even in the top half of FBS by academic rank.

What is the academic rank you refer to?

USNWR

You might instead consider factors like Carnegie classification, AAU status, research budget size, etc. Those are more pertinent to conference expansion decisions than USNWR ratings.

RE: Latest G5 Realignment article
I just wish the Sun Belt and CUSA would reshuffle. CUSA is way to spread out... It makes sense for

ODU
Appy State
Marshall
Western Kentucky
Middle Tenn
UAB
Southern Miss
FAU
FIU
Georgia Southern
Troy
Georgia State

This would give you some Southern mid major football powers. Marshal and Southern Miss (traditional D1 powers) Appy State, Troy, and Georgia Southern (traditional D1A powers) and some up and comers in good tv markets FIU, FAU and Georgia State. UAB and Western Kentucky give you some good basketball... and UAB is in a good tv market.

Southern Football with good tv markets...some traditional football powers... and some good basketball programs...

get some southern bowl tie-ins. 2 or 3 bid basketball league.

it could work.

Or drop Middle Tenn and FIU. Strong ten team league. U would still have a conference championship game...

Nice 10 team league basically in the old Southwestern footprint. Texas and Louisiana. Good recruiting decent tv markets. New Mexico State could be an add if you find a 12th team. they would add a good basketball program,,,and travel partner fro UTEP.

UTEP
UTSA
Rice
North Texas
Texas State
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana Ragin Cajuns
UL Monroe
Ark State
USA

If adding NMSU = CUSA 11 then keep USM = CUSA 12...OR
If adding USM = CUSA 11 then keep UAB = CUSA 12...OR add Troy = CUSA 12...
