Lunardi has MTSU in the First Four. CBS Sports and Fox Sports both have them as the first team out.

No top 50 rpi wins won't cut it. They went 0-3 in their preseason tournament against three tournament bound teams. They had a chance and blew it

Yes I know they still squeaked out two Q1 wins against mid majors

While people think they're worse than Saint Mary's, the RPI disagrees. MTSU has a better RPI than Saint Mary's, more Top 50 wins (3 to 2), and the same amount of Top 100 wins (4). MTSU won home and away against Western Kentucky (35th) and at Murray State (47th). Saint Mary's is in a better conference, but MTSU has played a harder schedule, 89th compared to 168th. MTSU's schedule is only 7 spots behind Michigan State. I wonder if the Selection Committee members know that or just assume Michigan State had a much harder schedule. I'm not saying Michigan State is a bubble team. I'm just giving an example of how MTSU's schedule compares to a famous team.

I'm saying MTSU for short because that's what you said, but they took "State" out of their name.

Big west #1 went down last night. 6 auto bid slots taken. Could really increase today too

Northeastern is a 6 seed on my projection, but it could get bumped out by several teams.

Nevada would be auto bid but they are optimally invited to the Dance despite this loss

Big west #1 is one of the UC schools from California. UC Davis I believe.

Hampton also lost as did AR Pine Bluff. That's two more nit bids on top of Vermont.

That's about 3 full seed lines taken by auto bids

With Harvard's loss today that means 12 Auto bids have been claimed in the 32 team tournament. Going to be a tough wait for NE

Officially Northeastern does not make the NIT field. I believe we have the highest RPI of any school not to make the NCAA or NIT field.

You do. You guys have 55 RPI. Next highest with no bid is Maryland at 74, Toledo at 75, and Old Dominion at 78.

Out of the 20 At large teams, the 14 teams with worse RPI ahead of Northeastern include

Nebraska #5 seed (56)
Marquette #2 seed (58)
Utah #2 seed (59)
BYU #6 seed (67)
Baylor #1 seed (68)
Notre Dame #1 seed (70)
Washington #5 seed (71)
Oregon #3 seed (72)
Mississippi St #4 seed (73)
Penn St #4 seed (77)
Stanford #3 seed (86)
Oklahoma St #2 seed (88)
LSU #3 seed (94)
Boston College #5 seed (95)

I think its safe to say that for non power schools, the RPI is really only a tool use to punish. A low RPI will keep you out, but a high RPI won't help your cause

That BC slot should be NE's

RE: NIT
My only suspicion is that they based the NIT field more heavily on the other metrics the committee had been discussing, i.e. BPI and Strength of Record, KPI, Jeff Sagarin Ratings and KenPom. That's the only way I can see the logic behind this.

RE: NIT
I just saw the CBI and CIT brackets and noticed that NO CAA teams are playing in the postseason outside of Charleston. Obviously the 5 teams with winning records are good enough to qualify. I wonder why this is? Seems as if the CAA sees no value in these tournaments but the lower conferences do see value.

I really think that the NIT should follow the WNIT format and go to 64 teams, and maybe eliminate the CIT or CBI. If you give every conference an automatic bid like in the WNIT, it would eliminate some of the anti mid-major BS that goes on.

RE: NIT
The CBI and CIT field gets worse every year. I don't know how or why these things stay around. Canisus is the best team in the CBI and they have 4 teams in the thing with a losing record! Out of 16! 25% of the field has a losing record!!?!?!

The CIT is a little better by not having any losing teams, but no one is that field stands out as a true NIT snub like Northeastern.

The CIT is playing games this afternoon, so they won't accept teams unless they withdraw NIT consideration. It's possible that the CAA may have forbid teams from participating in these tournaments.

It's the first time since 1999-2000 that the CAA has only one team in the postseason.
I think the NIT, CIT, and CBI are made by competing organizations, so don't expect any of them to go away.

The NCAA now owns the NIT. If they expand the NIT to 64 like the WNIT, then there wouldn't be very many teams that would even qualify for the CBI or CIT, and that would in essence eliminate them. Teams that have no interest in competing in one of the C tournaments might be more likely to want to compete in a 64 team NIT. The NIT has a long and storied history, and it's a bigger deal to be part of it, even if there are twice as many teams as in the past.

And the NCAA isn't going to expand the NIT and open themselves up to a predatory practices lawsuit, like the original NIT owners brought against the NCAA

The only way the NIT expands is if these tournaments die out and the NIT is expanded to fill the void.
