Northern Colorado can be enticed to move Baseball from WAC affiliate to Summit affiliate for small cash. End of story.

But that won't kill the Summit and bring on the prognosticated creation of the Great Northern Conference. My personal opinion is that UNC will eventually be a full member of the Summit as will UMKC. And if it happens, NoDak's head is going to explode.

I think NoCo will move to the Summit soon to be in a more geographical conference. It'll help with Denver and Omaha nearby. The Big Sky may even help that move along to get them down to a 10/12 setup.

As soon as North Dakota becomes a member on July 1st they need to call a vote and invite Northern Colorado to the Summit. The MVFC then becomes a 12 member Summit sponsored sport.

If and when PUFW leaves UMKC can have their slot.

The Summit is not going to take over the MVFC name. None of the schools want that. UNC and UMKC shore up baseball and soccer for the Summit.

They'd drop the name and just call it the Summit League. It's a tremendous help because it's another men's team sport under the conference banner towards maintaining their autobid.

Why? If you have half the members and your conference needs men's team sports why not?

Correct. The Summit will have enough for their own FCS conference.

They are not giving up the name brand of the MVC. WIU, NDSU, and SDSU don't want that. No way in hell would the other schools either. And they won't need to sponsors football for the men's sports requirement they have enough in baseball and soccer.

It would make far more sense for the MVC public football schools to just go along with the Dakota schools than to have two separate conferences. It makes scheduling a whole lot easier too.

I think you might be putting a little too much value into the MVC name. It's a One bid league. The WAC was a big name once--it hardly means that Utah Valley has an elite legacy.

Big difference between the histories of programs in the MVC (currently 8th) and the WAC (currently 14th). New Mexico St the obvious exception.

8/10 MVC schools have a Sweet 16 to their name (5/10 in the last 20 years). The 3/10 not in the last 20 years are a national champion (Loyola), a national runner-up (Indiana St), and a final four (Drake).

The Colonial football schools didn’t want to promote the A10 brand. Arkansas State withdrew from Big West leaving it below the minimum to be a football league to try to force their football members to join the Sun Belt.
You want brand consistency. The Summit name for football is better for schools playing in the Summit

I think your grasp of geography is off. Yes DU is very close, but the rest of the Summit is not. If you look at NoCo's out of state students they are overwhelmingly from the Mountain and Pacific time zone states. Football is easier in the BSC than the MVFC (less travel). Sac State and Portland State (Weber effectively too) are direct flights from Denver. (NoCo has the same bus trip to Denver Airport regardless of conference). They are a four corner state, and the nearest Football schools are Montana State and then more or less equal straight line distance to Montana, Idaho State, Weber State, SUU and NAU, all closer than the Dakota schools.

They are not moving. But they do need a home for Baseball and Swimming. That they chose the Denver based WAC over the Summit for those sports should tell you something about their frame of reference.

I can’t see why Northern Colorado needs a home for baseball or Women’s Swimming & Diving? The WAC will be a ten team baseball conference in 2019. UNC has been a member of the WAC for the past five years. Why do they need to leave?

I think you may be surprised where UNC ends up. And just for the heck of it, I suggest you take a look at a map, do the mileage calculations. Greeley is not a mountain town, it is on the plains. As for the Four Corners? The Front Range of Colorado has little, really nothing in common with the Western Slope (where I live).

As for your statement that UNC students come from the Pacific time zone. I'd be interested in where that stat comes from. The only school in Colorado that draws from the Pacific, regularly, CU who draw a lot of rich California kids who want to play. The bulk of UNC's students come from the mountain time zone. Over 75% come from the area. We have had this discussion before, Greeley is a cow town, it is not Boulder, it isn't Denver. It is heavily Hispanic with almost 40% of it's students being first generation college attendees. The school draws heavily from the Northern Front Range but also dips into Wyoming and Western Nebraska.

As for football being easier due to travel (MVFC v BSC). Not really true. If UNC joined the Summit, and Murray the MVC the league would be split. UNC would join the Dakota schools, and likely MSU or UNI in a western division. You are correct about major airports, but football teams charter so flying into Sioux Falls or Fargo compared to Portland or SLC, not really a big deal. And of course you have Bozeman and Missoula, not really much different.

The real issue with UNC, and the reason I think their is a good shot that they may move, joining the Summit would allow them to join their old rivals from the NCC and DU. UNC have struggled to create any rivalries since moving up. The newer students may not recall the UNC glory days in the NCC, but the older generation of fans and alumni do. I have several friends who attended UNC, all pine for the good old days of NDSU, UND and SDSU, playoffs, conference titles against large smack you in the mouth football schools. Add DU and suddenly UNC have some mojo.

We shall see, I just think your geography, and knowledge about UNC is way off.

I believe conferences with football also get more representation in the NCAA than conferences without football

It is nice to reminisce about past football glory and rivals, but that was when UNC was playing at the D2 level and winning championships. UNC is 33-100 in football since moving up to D1 and joining the Big Sky. It is difficult to establish rivalries in football when you are not competitive.

As for Denver, the only sport they have in common with Denver is basketball. Denver does not play football or baseball. UNC does not play ice hockey or lacrosse. UNC plays Denver in basketball every year, in non-conference play. They don't need to join a conference together for that game.

UNC does most of their sports recruiting in the West and in Texas. They have no one on their football or basketball or baseball roster from the Dakotas. Playing games in at Western Illinois and Fort Wayne really does nothing for them. Below is a list of where most of their alumni live:

http://www.unco.edu/about/alumni/

For recruiting and alumni connections, they are better off in western conferences, not a Dakota/Midwest league.

try again the 4 Dakotas, Omaha, and Tulsa are closer and easier to get to than the Big Sky schools.
