The Sioux Falls paper is so typically clueless and thereby wanting their home town Augustana to move up. But they are worried about IPFW leaving. Augustana doesn’t have men’s soccer which the Summit needs and a DII move up would not count for membership for five years

RE: MVC Prez's meet next week during Arch Madness- Murray St voted in?
If the Summit loses IPFW:

It has four men’s soccer programs (Denver, WIU, Omaha, ORU) plus one affiliate (EIU). There would be several options available for affiliates, including the WAC affiliates in Texas (Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist), C-USA affiliate New Mexico, and MVC affiliate Central Arkansas. There is also Dallas Baptist (MVC), but it is unclear if they count as they are a Division II program that plays up.

It has five baseball programs, all of which are full members (ORU, NDSU, SDSU, WIU, Omaha). Northern Colorado is the closest baseball affiliate, and Sacramento State is the only other option. Both are currently members of the Big Sky and play baseball in the WAC.

One solution would be to bring in Northern Colorado as a full member - they play baseball and FCS football, which sets up the ability to sponsor FCS football in the Summit League. The other solution is to make Eastern Illinois a full member, as they play football, baseball, and men’s soccer.

The real nightmare for the Summit League would be losing IPFW to the Horizon and WIU to the OVC. If the Summit goes the FCS football route, it would need to add Northern Colorado and Central Arkansas just to get to six in football. This might allow men’s soccer to be saved as well if EIU and WIU can hang on as affiliates. Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word would be the backup options to keep soccer alive, which might appease Central Arkansas.

If you add in Denver leaving for the WCC (replacing Gonzaga) top of WIU and IPFW leaving is when things get bad - at this point the only real means of survival for the Summit League would be to bring in Idaho, Montana, and Montana State and sponsor football while dropping baseball and men’s soccer. Adding only three Big Sky schools keeps the Big Sky from needing to replenish its ranks. At this point you question if Oral Roberts would want to stay - perhaps they give the Southland a second chance. Adding a fourth Big Sky school (Northern Colorado or Eastern Washington) destabilizes the Big Sky, who is now down to seven full members.

Which is why the Montana’s and Idaho are the best option and gives the Summit overall academic and political cohesion. Weber St may be in the mix too, so the Big Sky knows that they need to add teams, and CWU’s President is preparing for a Sky bid in 2020. CWU wouldn’t be tolerated by the Montana’s and Idaho, but would be needed immediately upon their leaving..

As you note, the Summit would have difficulty in even maintaining 6 football members. That is why you won't see the Summit adding football. It's a pipe dream.

More Horizon League chatter: There are no discussions about continued expansion, I'm hearing. Kind of surprised. Gung-ho not long ago.

There is nothing, repeat nothing going on as far as expansion in the Summit, Horizon, MVC, WAC or OVC.

Things are quiet because nothing is happening. The only changes are North Dakota joining the Summit, and NoDak resigning from the board on April 18th because his deadline for the "Great North" in any of it's various iterations will not have happened.

Bet the Horizon halted expansion because every previous candidate but Fort Wayne ceased interest.

I hereby nominate stugray2 for the biggest liar and hypocrite on this board.

Never did I say I would resign but one Big Sky poster asked me on Nov 18th when would the Great Northern would start happening. I replied probably in six months. Suddenly a bunch of Big Sky posters and Stugray2 started a narrative that I would resign by April 18th if it hadn’t happened by then, which is a big time lie. If it hasn’t happened by July 1st, which was the formal date that I later said was a drop dead date, I would probably severely limit my postings just out of embarrassment and lack of interest. Just this weekend there was a Summit League expansion article, so for him to state that there is “nothing is happening” is a lie too.

The hypocrite issue is that stugray2 posts blatantly false predictions, and when I calll him out on them, he hems and haws and blames other factors. He’s pretty much a snake.

So your current hypothesis is that the "Great Northern" (consisting of the 4 Dakota schools, the Montanas, Idaho, and... EWU?), an FBS conference, will be announced by July 1, 2018, with the start date of July 1, 2020?

So EWU is going FBS with a 8-10K seat stadium with one side of that seat capacity bleachers?

I was wrong about EWU. EWU depends on the Montana schools for big games and attendance but they realized they wouldn’t make the cut. They tried to fund raise for several different stadium projects, but the all didn’t pencil out. So their AD came to UND.

Now my favorite to replace EWU is Weber State, who is building a stadium addition for player workouts and study. With Weber St, those four schools have an inordinate fan base compared to the rest of the Big Sky. Omaha and Denver are included too, as they are hockey allies of UND.

Montana Schools have zero interest in a mid-western based dakota league. MSU admins chucked about the idea when asked. Their alumni and recruiting grounds are in the northwest and west. Take that to the bank. They stay in the Big Sky although they think the Big Sky over expanded and were happy to see UND leave. They dream of the day the P6 Break off, if it ever happens, and hope to join the G5 group of Wyo, CSU, USU, Boise, and Nevada. It is that dream or no movement at all for them

UNC now maybe can be picked off

reality is harsh

Have to agree with NoDak here: Augustana doesn't seem like a D-I prospect.

Quote:The Vikings still don’t have enough money for a move. Their athletic budget is just over $10 million. To have a competitive chance at the Division I level they’d basically have to double that. We’re not talking a one-time lump sum of $10 million, we’re talking an additional $10 million every year. And remember, the Vikings struggled to compete in most men’s sports in the NCC.

So, they'd have to double their budget to move up to rejoin their old NCC buddies the Dakota schools--who used to kick their heads in regularly in the NCC.

Best of luck to the Montanas for getting in the MWC with their smaller budgets. Their monster budgets in the Big Sky are paupers in the MWC. Both North Dakota schools have budgets that overwhelm them. The west needs a third FBS league for the Montanas to even have a shot of going FBS and later moving up. Those FBS schools won’t entertain supporting a fresh from FCS school.

there is not enough tv money in the west to support a 3rd fbs football conference. mwc commish stated that and it is reality. not happening. i agree montana and msu have zero shot at the mwc. but being members in the big sky or some mid western crap fbs conference wont change that. keep the dream alive but a far fetched dream it is. you keep trying to draw to the inside straight it seems.

It is a Sioux Falls thing. Augustana is never going to move up. They finally have it made. They can play against schools with their budgets and they can win.

But look, it gave NoDak something to talk about.

If Augie made the jump, football would either get the Omaha treatment or would go non-scholarship. I want nothing to do with Augie in the Summit but that is how they would do it.

They dream of the day the P6 Break off, if it ever happens, and hope to join the G5 group of Wyo, CSU, USU, Boise, and Nevada. It is that dream or no movement at all for them

UNC now maybe can be picked off

Best of luck to the Montanas for getting in the MWC with their smaller budgets. Their monster budgets in the Big Sky are paupers in the MWC. Both North Dakota schools have budgets that overwhelm them. The west needs a third FBS league for the Montanas to even have a shot of going FBS and later moving up. Those FBS schools won’t entertain supporting a fresh from FCS school.

Reality is harsh. 03-shhhh

Lashing out again, not a good trait.

By the way, take away UND's hockey budget and you have a better picture of where UND are compared to UM, MSU and NDSU.

Back to the MVC.

Sounds like they thought they had a consensus and some school(s) got cold feet.

That's not unusual. When Texas State and UTSA joined the WAC, they had previously applied to the Sun Belt. A few weeks before the WAC membership was announced there was a consensus to add UTSA to the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt by tradition (not bylaws) has always held that before a team is admitted in a state with a team already in the league, an in-state team should be the one to move to expand with the other in-state team. At the new business portion, the North Texas president remained silent for new business and the meeting was adjourned without offering a spot to UTSA.

Later when Georgia Southern was admitted, the motion to add came from someone other than Georgia State so the custom can be ignored if the votes are there.
