Ideas on how to make espn a mid-major.
I only watch live sports, do not listen to them on radio, do not read their stupid magazine and do not go online except for fantasy

I am sorry, if ECU would have gotten their basketball program just to NIT level every year, they would have been in the Big East 20 years ago. The basketball program has been the albatross around ECU's neck. Again, I will never understand why ECU could never get basketball off the ground but that is the primary reason why ECU has been kept our of BCS and P5 conferences. That is not ESPN's fault. Currently, the current AD is what is holding ECU down, not ESPN.
I agree with his overall logic (except that everyone is not a mid-major, there are low majors as well and true mid-majors get lumped in with them) but also have to go with this. ECU easily could have advanced forward but they don't even dominate at their own level. At least if they had been as good as Boise these last 20 years they'd do better.

I have to disagree. What’s going on with the Big 12 is a case in point. ESPN has become a monopoly, just like Standard Oil, Microsoft, Bell Telephone, etc. Time to give ESPN a rival.
DawgnBama,
I’m surprised to hear you say this....but glad! +3

What would you prefer the group of conferences outside the most powerful conferences be called besides G5 in FBS and mid-major in basketball?
Division 1 conference. One of the 10 FBS conferences. I want them called by what they officially are.

D-1?
Why is that so objectionable?
What else do we delineate along completely arbitrary, made up names? Lot of that stuff will get you into trouble...

I'm pretty much with you here. Watch live sports on ESPN and very little else. Occasionally, I catch PTI in the afternoon and I do watch College Game Day during the season, but it's been years since I sat through an entire sportscenter.
But I do watch a TON of live sports on the ESPN family.

The term DI is not objectionable. Then again, neither are P5, G5, mid-major, etc. These terms are not inherently derogatory. They simply reflect the very real gap in money, talent, and prestige between the P5 and G5 in FBS and the P6 and mid-majors in basketball. It's naive or misleading to not recognize such a distinction.

I can list several schools who have averaged top 25 in attendance for the past several years in basketball who aren’t “P6”. One of them has a losing record this year and still this year averages 12k in their 16k arena. (New Mexico)
By your definition, DePaul who plays in front of few fans & doesn’t have an arena is a “major” correct?
By your definition, Cincy, Uconn, Wichita St, Memphis, UNLV, SDSU, UNM, BYU, Dayton & St Louis in their big nice arenas that have hosted NCAA tournament games and even final 4’s are “mid-majors” correct?

It's not complicated - "major" can refer to conference or school. E.g., UConn is a "major" basketball program even though it is in the "mid-major" AAC conference.
It can be that way.

Nerd, I know it’s not your definition. ESPN is responsible for pushing this destructive label on us. Just like “Non P5” “Non BCS”
ESPN is responsible.

There's a serious level of butthurt here over really benign terms.

Yes, AAC performance in college hoops the past five years is text-book "mid-major", where "mid-major" means the next level down from the "major" level.
Major conferences - SEC, Big East, ACC, PAC, B1G, Big 12. They have been categorically better than the AAC the past four years.
According to RealTimeRPI, the AAC has been either the #7 or #8 conference the entire last 5 years. In none of those years have they ever had a better conference RPI than any of the P6 conferences. In contrast, all of the top 6 conferences have spent the entirety of that time within the top 6, ranging up or down inside it, but never outside of it.
That makes the AAC classically mid-major, and so far that hasn't changed with Wichita State. It might change in the future, but on the court so far it hasn't.
