RE: Something The SEC Ranks Last In
Fascinating. Arkansas bottom 10 in every category except "quality of life" where we are ranked 7th.
Quality of life for this ranking This new ranking tracks states' air quality, pollution, voter participation, social support and more.
Air quality no surprise Crittenden County (across the river from Memphis) and Pulaski (Little Rock) are the only counties out of 75 that ever score poorly on EPA air quality and Pulaski usually does better than Crittenden (we did a big giveaway of those Obama gas cans when Bush was president as a cheap way to get the air quality scores improved, I was working at the state Environmental Agency at the time. Pollution other than water runoff from hog and poultry farms we do well since we never had much heavy manufacturing and very little chemical manufacturing. Voter participation is helped by not having many off year elections. Social support I have no idea what that is but we were one of the fewer southern states to do the Medicaid expansion via a special process called private option, we didn't put the expansion people on Medicare, instead we contracted private insurers to cover them.

Hopefully health care will improve with two new medical schools.

Well, I guess I'll accept that. Where does U.S.A.Today rank as a publication? Their rankings of schools are hooey. Their newspaper is not even a good rag and there isn't enough in it to serve as TP, and the ink is horrible. Plus they sell most of their papers cheaply to hotels to claim a circulation. The quality of life in states is best measured by the residents, not outsiders with contrived measuring sticks be they left or right, or liberal or conservative. I'm sure California is a progressive state, but I've been there, have family there, and would take Alabama all day every day over that experience. But then I like to fish, hunt, and work in my garden and the cost of living is fantastic for retirees in the state of Alabama.

I thought the measurement was fair. They tried to pick objective measures (77 metrics across 8 categories).

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/...ethodology

You can read more about each metric they used. Because it's a data based ranking, it has a lot less subjectivity. For example: Public health ranking is based on the smoking rate, suicide rate, obesity rate, etc.

Well we are at least tied for dead last in legal alcohol consumption in our venues as non of them are permitted to have alcohol sales.

Reminds me of the time I flew Air Jamaica out of Ft Lauderdale. If you just listened to accents of the staff, the annoucements over the intercoms you would have sworn you were in Jersey or somewhere else up east....lol

This ranking is a crock. I have been to the middle of no-where Indiana. I lived there for years. One thing I know. Middle of no-where Indiana looks just like middle of no where Illinois and middle of no-where Iowa....flat nothingness.

Indiana #33 and Illinois #35 I don't necessarily agree with these as a ranking but at least they are close together. How does a corn bin like Iowa get #1. That makes no sense. Iowa is Illinois without Chicago or Indiana without Indianapolis. Just don't understand the thought process behind this ranking.

Depends what part of those states you're in. Northern Indiana, Central and Northern Illinois, and most of Iowa are flat-nothingness (although Iowa and Northeastern Indiana have rolling hills in parts). So is Northwestern Ohio.

But Southern Indiana and extreme Southern Illinois are both foothills . Most of southern Indiana (except along the corridor I-74 from Indy to Batesville) similar to West Virginia.

Southern Illinois actually has a lot of coal mines (where do you think the name of the town "Carbondale" comes from?)

Also, Iowa and Indiana ARE better than Illinois (and most other states on this list) because they have among the best education systems in the country. Both high school level and (especially) higher-ed. Better access to education improves the quality of jobs and the quality of life.

Consider this: Iowa State University is about twice as big (per capita) as the entire 10-campus University of California system.
