My boss said it best today. What we're seeing from Russia is cold war tactics and unfortunately we've forgotten how to play that game.

Putin is fricking with the EU. People are rebelling. Merkel is a goner. This is propaganda aimed at Brussels. He knows we would smack him around.

Wonderful.

Putin said today as he begins his re-election campaign that Russia has two nuclear-capable weapons - a cruise missile and a submarine-launched unmanned underwater vehicle.

The warhead, he said, was "a low-flying, difficult-to-spot cruise missile with a nuclear payload with a practically unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path, which can bypass lines of interception and is invincible in the face of all existing and future systems of both missile defence and air defence."

He argued that Russia had reacted after years of pleading with the US not to break away from anti-missile treaties.

My guess is its only "invincible" in its terminal phase when it goes hypersonic. It cant run hypersonic the entire route--otherwise its range is about 30 miles. Lasers move at the speed of light---so boasting that the missile has the ability to stay invincible to any future technology is silly. We arent far from being able to deploy laser weapons that can easily take out the kind of missiles he is describing. He is, however, correct in pointing out they are well ahead of the US in missile technology.

Yall remember the old anecdote about Russians ordering 50,000 condoms for the military that had to be 11 inches long. The story is that the American manufacturer called to confirm the order and that the snarky Russians responded that of course those were the correct specifications. Before shipping all the condoms, the American manufacturer made sure all the boxes where labeled "medium".
