My God, has our schedule been one hot pile of garbage so far. I will never understand why Berry insists on playing in this tournament.

Congrats to Tech on a big win.

No one could predict how bad State would be.

But yes, I'd have hoped in its third year, this tournament could draw some better teams. Don't see why it shouldn't be able to with the location. My assumption is they go for teams they can get down there for cheap (small northern schools for the most part) or schools that can bus in.

Well, State has very little in terms of proven players. Not shocked at all. But certainly when the series was scheduled, we were expecting more from rhem.

Even if they were good, the schedule is still garbage.

This is actually the fifth year for the tournament—with the field becoming progressively worse. It has usually been one snowbird team and three Southeastern mid-majors.

Caillet (who does the majority of the scheduling, not Berry) generally refuses to play OOC games more than 4 hours away. We’ve played 2 OOC weekends over 4 hours from Hattiesburg since Caillet got here. CoC tournament in 2011 and Missouri in 2014 (which was only done so Berry could have a homecoming weekend). It’s incredibly frustrating.

Also, USM fans are generally obsessed with playing at home. We have to be the only fanbase in America that ranks an OOC based on how many home games we have, not based on the actual competition we play. Last year’s OOC was considered good by our fans because we played 30 home games, even though we had weekend series against Northeastern, Evansville, and Xavier. Playing midweek games against Ole Miss, State, USA, and Tulane is typically enough to make USM fans happy with the OOC. So stupid.

We need to adopt South Alabama’s schedule strategy. They don’t care about return trips or playing a billion pointless home games against OVC and Ivy League schools. They just want to play the best competition possible. So much so that Calvi cancelled their opening home series vs CoC so they could join the Coastal tourney which was a better RPI weekend. I can tell you that we wouldn’t make that move in a million years.

You know that I will rant on this with you.

There's absolutely no reason that we can't play a West coast or Texas series or tournament.

I want our hitters to see elite pitchers and for our pitchers to see the kind of **** that you can't get away with when you are pitching to elite competition (e.g. McCarty hanging curveballs to right-handed hitters). That makes you better...even if you lose a series.

But hey, this is the way we can feel good about ourselves for beating some crap OVC team (oops...we lost one of those games), let THE ROOST!!! have three extra games to grill and blow the horn, and to look at our "Tradition of Excellence" billboard.

Rice leading HBU 7-5 in B6.

Both teams have been pitching a little bit of batting practice.

I was talking to someone in the know about playing out West for a weekend. This guy seemed to think that a trip to California or Arizona is something we can only do about once a decade because of our budget situation. Though I’m pretty sure softball has played weekend series/tournaments recently at Fresno and at Arizona. I see no reason why baseball couldn’t do something similar.

USM would rather spend money on some bush-league billboard in LF than on a road trip that would help our team/program. TTT.

I mean if the program is hard up money wise just play a guarantee series at ASU, U of A, or UCLA.

5-5 now. It seems we can only count on the starting pitcher to win the game because the second and third guys have given up many runs the past few games. They arent really pulling us out of bad situations very well.

I’d be fine with that. But like I said, our staff/fanbase is infatuated with playing at home. We seem to be happy playing SIU-Edwardsville or Evansville at home over playing Arizona or UCLA on the road. It’s ridiculous.
