In 2017. True.

In 2022? Not so sure about that.

Conference USA 2017 home football TV schedule
Primary National Cable Telecasts (12) -- ESPN (2), ESPN2 (2), ESPNU (2), CBS Sports Network (6)
Secondary National Cable Telecasts (24) -- Stadium (14), beIN SPORTS (10)
Regional Telecasts (14)
Internet Exclusives (19) -- Stadium Facebook (6), ESPN3 (13), CUSA.tv

Sun Belt 2017 home football TV schedule
Primary National Cable Telecasts (9) -- ESPN2 (4), ESPNU (5)
Regional Telecasts (2)
Internet Exclusives (et al.) -- ESPN3

C-USA had 50 home games made available to watch on linear television compared to Sun Belt who only had 11 home games. My friends & family were able to watch every Florida Atlantic football game on their TV except for one on Stadium Facebook and one on ESPN3.

We'll make more on our Saturday gate than you will from ESPN and no crowd.

Would you give up one Saturday game to play on Thursday on national TV (real TV)?

The correct question is would you give up Saturday games to play on Tuesday or Wednesday, which is primarily where ESPN parks the SB games.

Actually they don't. Next year, here are the midweek game schedules

Thursday night games

Georgia State at Troy
App at Georgia Southern (will still draw well)
Georgia Southern at Texas State

Tuesday night games

Troy at USA (it will still draw 30,000 plus)
App at Ark State

---

It does suck that USA/Troy (which would draw closer to 40,000 on a Saturday afternoon) and App/Georgia Southern (which would be much better attended on a Saturday than a Thursday) are midweek.

But please note that only 5 schools have midweek games at home. And for one of those teams (USA), the game will probably still be very well attended anyway.

---

Unless there's a MLB playoff game that night, the Tuesday night games will be the only sports programming on television that night. These games do draw eyeballs.

---

ESPN really sticks it to the MAC, rather than the Belt with the midweek games (but that is probably why they get more money). WMU plays FOUR of them. And their midweek games come later in the season when there's a lot more competition from other sports.

---

Maybe if CUSA was willing to play midweek games, they'd not be facing such strong financial pressures. MTSU is going to 5 home games next year (and will probably only face the following OOC teams at home in the next 3 seasons Duke, Liberty-who is probably paying MTSU for a home and home, and FCS teams), WKU is cutting its athletic department budget. Certainly theres more to it than just a refusal to maximize revenue from TV, but that's part of it. Maybe a better way of looking at a Tuesday or Thursday night game is as follows....Better a midweek game than a ROAD game (or a poorly considered OOC schedule).

Midweek games might work once per season for a marquee game, but a SunBelt game of the week won't draw flies. They depend on fans driving a few hours up the mountain, and your average school teacher App grad has to be at school by 7:15 the next morning or lose a day's pay. They will stay at home and watch it on TV. It will be the beginning of the end.

They don't need your "credit". Their football program is doing just fine without your credit.

Having a bad day?

Does the new deal begin this year (18-19) or next year (19-20)?

Right now you only have six on ESPN networks (you missed one by the way: GA St vs Ark St). So, either four more games will go on ESPN networks as part of the new deal or the newly announced deal doesn't include the 2018-19 season. Do you know?

Again from an outside perspective, if CUSA falls behind SBC, you all need a new commish! I think MWC goes with Stadium and Facebook with decent money. Either CUSA needs this or they need to try to get an ESPN+ deals.

I'm pretty sure C-USA needs a new commish regardless of that point.

I don't know all the details. To be clear, I'm not a huge fan of paywalls. But they're coming. I don't think the Belt got some sort of great deal, but probably a pretty decent one. It gives us more revenue, and it preserves our access to the ESPN platform, and maintains some minimum quality to the broadcasts. All without making our teams go the MAC 40% midweek route (which is too far in my opinion).

I'd rather have this deal than to lose more money on poor quality streams that aren't going to be accessed by anyone other than diehard fans of our programs. At least on ESPN+, there will be other folks that are going to have the package and more importantly, will be accustomed to accessing it. It doesn't matter if the other option is free, if virtually no one is used to accessing it, they probably wont do so.

There are usually more games during the year that make it onto TV. We've had Saturday night games get picked up by ESPNs networks.

While we still don't know the whole story, this snip gives us some info regarding "more revenue"...

RE: Sunbelt signs multi-year deal with ESPN...
Yeah, I have no qualms with this deal. I was pretty happy with the previous deal because I got to watch all conference games and we always got at least one game nationally televised. We also had locally broadcast games that were also on Peachtree TV. In the meantime, I've tried to watch CUSA games and found that since of them were literally not broadcast anywhere, felt like watching CAA games again. Sometimes they were on CUSA TV, which costs more than $5 to watch a single game. People were suggesting after we built out our new stadium that we might move to CUSA. No thanks, I don't want to pay for beIn and then spend $10 a month (or $100 a year) just to watch conference games. I was likely to buy ESPN+ anyway (anyone who cares about college baseball is gonna end up buying it), the fact that it costs half the amount of CUSA TV makes it a hell of a lot easier to swallow. As for Facebook, if people are browsing around for sports, they aren't going to Facebook for it. There's a much larger chance of that happening on ESPN+.

Since ESPN is negotiating with AAC, MWC and BYU on their new contracts. Have to think the SBC is not releasing money amount per ESPN's request. Just a guess.

The correct question is would you give up Saturday games to play on Tuesday or Wednesday, which is primarily where ESPN parks the SB games.

That would depend on the payout. A few of those may well be worth it for some decent TV Revenue.

Not compared to 20k+ paying $35 dollars a ticket on Saturdays, plus some cheaper endzone and family packs added on and $100 chairbacks that aren't season tickets. Also add in a TV payout whether we're on or not and we're always on something.

I don't mind our TV once they get consistent apps for each device. Nobody's watching your games other than the fans involved with the playing teams no matter what channel you're playing on. You think I'm tuning in to ESPN 3 to watch USA and Appy play? No. Neither are you finding Stadium or Facebook to watch Marshall play MTSU. So the network isn't important. The market isn't important. The day is important. The bottom line is important. The bottom line is we make a hell of a lot more money playing on Saturday.

We always had good crowds on mid week espn games, always more than 25,000, certainly not a 20,000 difference. Maybe a couple thousand, MAYBE. And don't forget when we play on Saturdays, it clashes with youth sports constantly and we usually lose those couple thousand anyway if its an early game.

And heck, Doc being on the side lines is costing us at least 8,000 a game in reported attendance and 13000 in real.

Thursdays were not midweek games. And we did not compete against the NFL when we played them. Thursdays allowed fans to take Friday off and make it a long weekend. Tuesdays and Wednesdays do not. It is not apples to apples. And we play later now on Saturdays where it does not clash with youth sports. And we were winning games by the dozens in many of those years. You put us on a Tuesday night, now, and actual butts in seats will be under 10k.

I didn't say we'd be down 20k, I said what we make on Saturdays. You also have to consider that we weren't charging $35 a seat back then either. Lot more to lose now for every single person that doesn't attend a game. We make 30% more for each person that attends on average. There will be more attendance with changes for at least the coming year. Tuesday/Wednesday nights will kill that revenue over the season. At best it's a wash so 5k people can watch it on ESPN 3 and 10k less can see it in person. This is part of the reason we left the MAC. We knew this was coming down the pipe.

The reason I would hate CUSAs deal isn't whether they're on regular TV or not, but that some of the games are carried on CUSAtv, which costs $6 for one viewing (or $10 for a month), a couple were carried on FloSports ($30 a month), some were carried on BeIN (which, if you don't have access to it already costs $15 a month to steam), and some of them weren't carried at all. As it is now in the SBC, it doesn't matter whether it's over the air or streamed, I'm still watching via WatchESPN app that's built into my tv, I know every single conference and home game will be carried on it, and it costs me nothing extra to what I'm already paying. If we end up paying $5 a month extra for ESPN+, I'm getting access to all my schools basketball, baseball, and football games, all the conferences games, and whatever other conferences end up having contracts on there (plus any other sports are carried on there). That, plus we know we're going to have more game broadcast nationality on TV with this new contract. A lot better than having to pay for a hodgepodge of different providers to watch a single game, or having to plug a laptop into the TV (or use a phone) for social media apps.

C-USA had 50 home games made available to watch on linear television compared to Sun Belt who only had 11 home games. My friends & family were able to watch every Florida Atlantic football game on their TV except for one on Stadium Facebook and one on ESPN3.

Quoting for a good breakdown that the sun belt fans have ignored all thread long. Cusa is still on real tv more

I agree with you on that.

I see your point, but is it still worth it if several of your home games are on Tuesdays?

This season we have two Thursday night games a Friday night game to be in national tv. In fact we've only ever had games on Thursdays and Fridays because of national TV. But also yes, one Tuesday or Wednesday night game a season is worth having every game broadcast on an accessible format that costs no more than $5 a month.
