RE: Temple Stadium Town Hall March 6th
My wife attended Norfolk State University back in the late 80s. I myself lived in that area for 4 years back then. We returned so that she could attend homecoming last Fall.
We ended up at the football game which was played in a stadium that had been built since my last time there. The stadium was built in 1998 for a cost of only $12 million. Around this time I recall Temple considering a campus stadium but the admin decided it was too much hassle considering that a new bball arena had just been built. By hassle I am referring to politics.
The stadium at NSU can hold 30k. It's mostly bleachers and a no frills stadium but it's a good facility for a 1AA school. They generally fill the stadium only once or twice a season. The tailgating was held at a special area that leads into the stadium. I suppose you could call it a Quad.
My impression is that this has been a great add for NSU. Tailgating was fun and the marching band was great. The game took a backseat to these activities.
NSU is in an inner city area only a few miles from downtown Norfolk.
This setup may not be that different from what Temple is looking at.
One thing that I did notice was that 30k seats is not a big stadium. I think that Temple fans and neighbors are going to be surprised at how compact our 35k seat stadium is going to be.
It will be no more of a distraction than the bball arena is. Time has shown that our bball arena has been a great addition to the campus and gets all of the credit for helping to spur area and campus development since it opened.
