If the university is paying for this then why do have to listen to a bunch of yentas yell at them for an hour ? Because that is EXACTLY what these dank things turn into.

Case in point: UCF.

The school paid for the stadium but had town hall meetings anyway. There was a notorious yenta busy body who screamed bloody murder about traffic and crime but it turned out she didnt even live in the surrounding neighborhoods.

RE: Temple Stadium Town Hall March 6th
What's interesting is that the Stadium Stompers group held a town meeting of their own on Thursday. They did get plenty of attention from the local media.
Their FB page claimed that 500 people showed up. A local paper reported a packed hall of 400 people. The TU student newspaper finally got it right at 100 people. I checked the pics and 100 was about right. Maybe 1/5 of the auditorium seats.
This type of slanted reporting is hurting Temple in their efforts to woo politicians. One good thing is that the Stompers group angrily admitted that no local politicians attended.
There is no doubt that the local politicians will be at the Tuesday Temple Town Hall. The Stompers did managed to add the local NCAACP, the local Black Clergy and a Temple professors group to their side. Still only 100 for all of these orgs was not a lot of people.
My guess is that they will get about that many at the Temple Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Hopefully, Temple folks will have them outnumbered by at least 5 to 1.
I keep telling people that in the end, money talks. Temple has $130 plus to spend on this project.
I don't think that the city can afford to thumb their nose at any big projects at this point.
I think that at this Tuesday meeting we will here some bickering but at the end of the night Temple's investment in this project will win out.
I can see this stadium in as little as 15 to 20 years contributing $100 million to the Philadelphia economy. Money talks ..

They have to kiss their ass because if not they will protest at city hall. And the media will play it as the big bad rich college is pushing the black community out of their houses. The north Philly councilmen will threaten to boycott all city project approvals, and hold up any permit approvals.

In the past 50 years the north Philly community has a history of being antagonistic towards Temple. Despite the fact that the university employs over 70% of the north Philly residents, and provide the neighborhood with free use of most university facilities, largely free health care at Temple University hospital, free or greatly discounted tuition, special admission standards, etc. etc. And this in an area that has one of the highest unemployment rates in Pennsylvania. If not for Temple, this area would be a vast wasteland.

Yes, but this was in a lily white picket fence neighborhood though. Other than that, I agree with you.

Good to see that Temple is progressing on their stadium. Great to know that I can still watch them at the LINC for at least 3 more years. 02-13-banana 02-13-banana COGS COGS 04-jawdrop 04-cheers

It went as expected.10 minutes into the presidents remarks, the free loaders took over the dialogue, and wouldnt shut up. So it ended. The next phase is to bring boxes of cash to the meeting and hand it out. Thats the only thing they understand.

Excellent, excellent, phase 1 complete.

It's Philadelphia so I assume someone local will have the boxes for sale? Some place named big city politics: briefcases and money boxes.

So phase 2 nears completion, soon the death star will be fully operational. . . I mean ah stadium.

Awful hard to listen to concerns when the event they show up to hear them at chases them away.

When you do that you don't have concerns, you have demands.

The Town Hall did not go very well for Temple. At least half of the crowd were part of the anti Stadium Stompers group. The group had protestors both inside and outside the venue. They used bull horns and even had a car speaker system blasting anti stadium messages.
The TU president was interrupted several times and only made it about 10 min into his presentation. Folks did receive a printed brochure.
I would say the protestors did very well this week considering the fact that the media covered both the Temple Town Hall and there town hall. Lots of negativity in the press.
However Temple did get the message out to the press that they would be funding both a daycare center and a mental health center for the community. Additionally Temple will be providing funds for a local community rec center upgrade.
I can see Temple moving forward but not holding any large open meetings. Many small private meetings have been held with various community groups. I would cross the Stadium Stompers off of my list as a group that Temple can win over.

For what it's worth, I heard from someone highly connected that Temple expects to receive approval from city officials for the stadium by the summer.

A city like Philadelphia can't afford to turn down a $130 million project that will create jobs and revenue.

We are talking about perhaps 6 or 7 Temple football games and a few high school games per year. The complex will host 8 to 10 retail stores that will be open every day. There will also be classrooms.
Temple wins, the city wins ...

I've always wondered how people like this expect to win people to their side by using Alinsky tactics. They just come across as irrational a$$ holes.

Temple's OCS has a chance to be added to one of the great marvels in human engineering history. Its going to be a 35,000 seat, state of the art modern, multi- purpose facility with additional designated classrooms, conference center and retail outlets to be squeezed into an 8 acre plot in a neighborhood designed and built during the industrial revolution....all for just 130 million dollars !!! Plus it will succeed without adding a single extra parking space.

Im going to take the liberty and place this into one of 3 biggest farces Temple fans have believed through the years...

1. The Big East is very happy with the arrangement they have with Temple
2. Temple will build the above mentioned facility and it wlll be a smashing success
3. Temple next up for the ACC
