Really it is about strategic rotating, and playing in NY offers top media and the exposure is not bad for conference recruitment, making a statement about footprint, giving those most eastern schools a bit of convenience, etc.

Chicago or Indianapolis would make sense as a permanent host. But rotating has some good arguments.

I agree with everything except the media. The media would flock to the tournament if it was held in Buford, Wyoming (population 1).

I hope that guy has a very big house.

Okay guy from Houston, tell us again how Rutgers isn't a NY team as they literally sit in the NYC TV market. A half hour drive from campus and you're in Manhattan. Keep those P6 dreams alive though.

I mean, nobody disputes the geography, just whether anyone cares. Iona is a NYC-area school too....

@Rutgers Guy

I'll give it to you that I don't live up there. That's why it's better to take a poll of posters. For those of you that live u there and have significant New York experience, how big is Rutgers up there? I should get the answer I expect.

I know because Houston sports aren't enormous around here and any Houston area college. The same is true in almost any city that's not home to a land grant or state flagship.

When you count the current Big East teams that are relatively local, the former ones who are/were big there (mostly UConn and Cuse), and the national programs that attract frontrunners (Duke/UNC, etc) they may not be top 10. I've lived in range of the NYC commuter trains my whole life and have family in NYC proper (as does my wife) so I'm probably local enough to chime in.

RE: Take the Big Ten Tournament back to Chicago...
UConn and Syracuse fans travel well. that is why the crowds came to the garden. From my experience the average New York area sports fan doesnt care about UConn unless they have some tie to the school. The Rutgers gear popped out of the closet a few years ago when the FB team had their run. Now its back in, Of the 3 Syracuse has the edge. FB is even less of a factor.
During BB season the local news will cover st johns and Rutgers primarily. Followed by Syracuse and lesser extent UConn (as long as they are doing well) Fordham, Iona, Hofstra, Monmouth, Manhattan, Army,Marist and Stony Brook get hardly a mention at all, St Peters, Rider, NJIT even less

Now if Rutgers ever became a factor in the B1G they would draw interest. However wen was the last time they had a winning conference record in BB? Prior to their BE days for sure.

The last time I believe was 2001-02 when they were 8-8 in conference.

Here is where people like you get lost. All of those kids in that land grant university 30 min from NYC go somewhere to work and live. Want to take a guess where? NYC and Philly mostly.

Delany has a long game to play here. Can't blame him for trying.

But why?

To grow interest in the B1G, and thus revenue, in the DC - NYC corridor.

Yeah and where do the majority of UH grads end up after graduating?

No disrespect, good of you to support your school but I doubt Rutgers does much in New York, getting lost in a sea of collegiate and sports affiliations. I can believe it for New Jersey however.

RE: Take the Big Ten Tournament back to Chicago...
Was at a session this week for the B1G Tourney for the first time. Very enthusiastic crowd at MSG and a lot of fun. With 3 schools (approx. 20%) east of the B1G traditional base, the Tournament should come east once every five years. It gives large alumni bases on the east coast an opportunity to root for their school within driving distance. That's fair and hopefully the Conference sees this as a positive.
Regionalism within conferences has been over for some time, is not coming back and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, the B1G loves its traditions, however, living in today's society and having new experiences is also important. After all that's how traditions get started.

Once again this is where people like you get lost. There isn't some great divide between NJ and NYC. All of those pro and collegiate sports still exist and are followed just as closely as NYC. NYC is the #1 TV market because half of it is half of NJ. NYC is more closely aligned with NJ than it is with the rest of the state of NY.

Don’t see it back at msg unless the big east gives up it timespot but could go to nets arena or new islanders pad. I would guess Philadelphia gets the next east coast spot, be cool if they put it in the Palaestra. Personally, I think it should be in Chicago every year though.

Sue Aiken at Kavik River Camp in Alaska is 197 miles north of the Artic Circle and 300 miles from the nearest neighbor.
She does have housing pods for hunters and fishermen visiting.

That's quite different from America's largest city that hosts the most extensive international media outreach.

I think a better analogy would be Texas A&M support in Houston.

New Jersey is separated, but it's a huge part of the metro. Without New Jersey, NYC would be a bit smaller than Los Angeles.

The NYC metro is:
The City: 8.5 million
New Jersey suburbs: 6.6 million
Rest of Long Island: 2.7 million
Upstate NY State suburbs: 2 million
Fairfield County, CT: 0.9 million

Okay it's not Chicago proper, but Northwestern is 15 miles North of downtown Chicago and is of course part of the Chicago–Joliet–Naperville, IL–IN–WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Not to mention the B1G headquarters are directly adjacent to O'Hare.

Had Michigan been bounced early it may not have gone as well, but overall good showing. John B even mentioned in his postgame speech that ideally they’d be playing Thursday or Friday. I don’t think we’ll see the Big 10 in MSG again for a very long time.
