I'm not sure why you're bulldogging this. If you've spent time in Joisey, you know that the NYC penumbra spreads out quite a ways, and it definitely covers Rutgers.

Sure, that penumbra fades the farther we move away from the epicenter. New Brunswick isn't as much New York City as Times Square is, but it's definitely in the zone of influence and orbit.

Rutgers sits pretty much halfway between Philly and Manhattan...Rutgers is a team that plays in the NY area...but they are not NY's Team. No college team controls NYC.

I agree with that. I was just saying that NYC has a strong influence on New Brunswick. Not vice-versa.

Big Ten title on east coast about 20% of the time sounds about right. It should be played most often in Indy or Chicago or somewhere like that.

Here is a good article from 538 about the location of conference tournaments relative to their geographic center .

Stronger New York than Philly. Go down the road to Princeton and that's where the line between NY and Philly gets murky.

Would have to agree, Rutgers is like 70 miles from Philadelphia and 35 miles to MSG in NYC via car...

South Jersey changes to Philadelphia TV Stations, and is another world from Central and North Jersey.

Great proof source that helps explain the area.

We actually joke that you can detect a southern dialect in the speech between South Jersey... (and have some South Jersey friends that prove that) vs North Jersey slang. That's part of the dynamic of North Jersey feeling like they are part of NYC and

Yet another example of our overly pretentious society, where people try to feel more important than they are. The Big Ten doesn't even have a team in New York and no, Rutgers doesn't count as anything New York except one night 12 years ago.

Okay guy from Houston, tell us again how Rutgers isn't a NY team as they literally sit in the NYC TV market. A half hour drive from campus and you're in Manhattan. Keep those P6 dreams alive though.

Google Maps says 1 hour and 3 mins at this moment. Rutgers is NJ's team not NY's team

lol thats because there's a snowstorm right now.

And there is no way...you are getting to MSG from Rutgers in 30 mins other than 3am with a radar detector

BTW, up to 1 hour and 11 mins now...guess the snow picked up. LOL

Don't know if it was always exactly 30 mins or not but close enough and yes it was typically 2-3 AM ish definitely kept Escort Radar Detector on high LOL (Exit 8 for those that know). BTW, I don't recommend doing it that way. Better way =New Jersey Transit NE Corridor train or Amtrak = 47 mins and you come up in Penn Station/MSG. No extra charge to ride Amtrak with monthly NJ Transit pass. Trains hit 105 mph for good stretches so they're really booking it

So no one in New Jersey roots for the Jets? I'm being rhetorical.

i'd say probably around 30-40% of North Jersey are Jets fans, and about 40-50% are Mets fans.

50% sounds high. I doubt even 50% of NYC is Yankees fans because they're older and obviously much more successful, even after the Mets were enfranchised.

Difficult to say really. There are the hardcore fans of each, and then there are the bandwagoners that switch to whomever is winning at the time. The recent two years when the Mets were better than the Yankees, both their ticket sales and tv numbers outdrew the Yankees by a significant margin. Just like when I was growing up, there were more Mets fans than Yankees fans because the Yanks stunk in the 80s.

I see your point. That said, I have to believe that the Yankees don't have have much larger base, even if many go dormant for a long time.

Understand the history, and with the Jets spending the early years at Shea Stadium in Queens, and they came in 1960, well after the Giants, they were dominated by Long Island fans, but of course over time and just like most things in the NYC area, when you win, some will follow.... and the move to NJ sure helped, but no where near what the Giants pull in NJ.

You have to realize that while the Yankees are the all-time winningest franchise, the NYC metro area was already split before the Mets came along between the Yanks, Giants, and Dodgers. When the Giants and Dodgers moved, most of those fans already disliked the Yankees and so they adopted the Mets, so their following is basically just as strong as the Yankees despite not being anywhere as successful.

This seems about right, at least north of the city.

The title of this thread should be “Push the B1G Tourney back to the Normal Week”. Wow, that time off didn’t help their bubble teams, did it? I have to admit, it was weird not watching some B1G hoops as the last game before the selection show. Get it together Jimmy Heel!
