I wouldn't mind Gonzaga with BYU as combo but in BYU's case they would need to bring their football along, BYU as a basketball only is a none starter and doubt league members would agree.

Not that AAC expansion is anywhere in site again, but if there was wonder who Wichita State would favor as a future basketball member.

What say you Shocker fans

I'd rather have Rhode Island than VCU for some reason. I don't think there are any more no-brainer, win-win adds like us to the American was though.

12 Teams is perfect. No need to dilute the product. 12 gives a conference championship in football and an even number of teams in basketball. The key to the AAC advancing as a league is getting Cincinnati back to where it should be in football and getting UConn/Memphis back to where they should be in basketball.

Agree... AAC shouldn't go over 12 but if BYU approach this league what then?!? I think at that point 14 would be that number this league ends up.

If BYU comes a knockin' that would be great for the AAC. I think the Independent road in football is tougher than BYU expected, and was seen as a quick fix anyway to get out of the MWC and non-BCS status. That's where I think the AAC doesn't offer much upside for BYU since the AAC a non-BCS conference in football. I would love to have the Cougars in the AAC for all-sports. Great fans, national name, great academics. Utah in he PAC-12 for BYU is problematic as the gap in the Beehive State is beginning to widen, especially in football. The Cougars may be more motivated to move quickly now, especially if the AAC could package BYU in the P6 angle somehow.

Any new adds must have 30k+ enrollment or Army/Air Force.

Already with Tulane (13.5k) /Tulsa (4.6k)/SMU (11k) we have enough small, private schools where students flea upon graduation.

Maybe Rhode Island (18.3k) would be more like WSU (15k) or Memphis (21k). In that it feels kind of like a land grant state school with a big local fan base.

But you have VCU (31k) and UMASS (28.6k). Boise brings great football but at 22k enrollment I don't think the travel expenses make sense.

Some more enrollment sizes:

SDSU: 33.7k
CSU: 33k
UNLV: 28.6k

FIU: 53k
FAU: 31k
UTSA: 29k
ODU: 25k

Buffalo: 30k
Kent St: 30k
NIU: 25k

Georgia St: 50k
UT-Arlington: 39k
Texas State: 39k

I would love to have VCU in the american. It might allow them to actually hold on to a coach. With the bump in recruiting and scheduling they would be a consistent tournament team in our league.

VCU is a no-brainer. Within the footprint, similar profile to the other member schools, solid athletics, and enrollment/endowment numbers that university presidents love. Aresco should be wooing them as we speak.

Rhode Island? WTF? The amusement park?

VCU has averaged a 2.4 finish in the A10 since 2012.
Rhode Island Adventureland Family Fun Park has averaged a 7.8 finish since 2012.

Any east coast basketball program added to the AAC that doesn't come from the Church League would be VCU. In fact, there are only half a dozen basketball programs I'd vote for to have in the AAC that currently reside in the Pee. VCU is at least as good with respect to potential and branding than the bottom half of the Jesuit Dreg Consortium.

I'd like to see a football school added to the mix. Becoming a true P6 adds a whole new dimension for all ACC sports. I don't think focusing on basketball is the way to take that next step.

I think BYU is planning on sticking indy. BYU probably only makes sense FB only for both sides if we can even get that. I'd love to add two more basketball schools though. Just stick with our 12 football schools unless BYU wants to play.

The dilemma is that Army is the only football school that adds any value without any travel headaches.

If you add one football-playing school, then you have to add two. At this point, two probably takes away value from the conference instead of adding value. With basketball you have more flexibility as far as who would add value to the conference. VCU does that. Plus there's the issue of conferences going to 20-game basketball schedules, increasing the need to add a basketball program that can help you get tourney bids.

Army+VCU && AirForce+Saint Louis (solid baseball)

Try figuring out how to schedule Navy/Army/Air Force.......

They have to be in the same division. Then they can only play once a year.

That's not too surprising, given the lack of worthwhile options.

Exactly; bball adds are an inexpensive way to add power conference cache without draining the TV contract with two extra mouths to feed with football money. I think Rhode Island and VCU (or the Bonnies)would do that; the talking heads love VCU, Rhode Island and the Bonnies.

I am a alumnus of Metropolitan State University of Denver...a D2 school with an enrollment of more than 35k. Similar situation to Georgia State...an urban, commuter school with a majority of part-time and professional students. And like Georgia State, most MSUD students and alumni pull for some other school...University of Colorado or one of the pro-teams. (Hell, I started pulling for Cincinnati while I was there...) It's not that we don't love our Roadrunners, but simply that most MSUD students don't spend the same amount of time on the campus as the "traditional" campus students do. We commuted in, we worked, we raised families...all while studying and earning our degrees.

Why am I telling you this story? Because I'm not trying to dump on Georgia State. But just because that have an enrollment of "50k" doesn't necessarily translate into major fan interest. They are a large, urban, commuter school; I don't think they fit into what this conference is trying to do.

From the outside looking in it appears they are trying to change their model at least somewhat. I wonder if they are trying to become the next UCF.
