RE: 2018 MLB Season Thread
Interesting stuff going on tonight. Giants thumping the Angels! (swoosh is swooning) SD beating AZ! (go Padres) Scherzer outdueled Kershaw by a mile* (that's not interesting at all) but Nat's pen trying to give it back.

*But Kershaw went deeper in the game than Scherzer; he's TOP TIER!

Panda is starting in place of Posey who has an injured thumb (and of course batting in the same spot in the lineup, because if you replace a guy, Bochy puts you in his spot no matter what). He's K'd twice, both on pitches out of the zone and now has a 66 wRC+ with a K rate of 36%. Can we please end this?

Sean Manaea of Oakland no-hit the hottest hitting team in baseball, the Red Sox, today. Manaea has all the signs that he is going to be a stud pitcher.

Yeah, it's interesting but I'm gonna go Missouri on this one: Show me.

You're not too cynical.

Last night v Nats he was 94-96 and lots of movement. Fixed his landing spot? If he can do it again I'll take a little comfort that one problem may have been fixed. Only a dozen or so remain...

Starting to look like this is the rare example of a guy who really did have a mechanical issue. Of course it's a Dodger

Walker Buehler makes his first pro start Monday v Marlins. Good team for your first start, yeah? He pitched in the bigs last year but only relief, ERA over 7 in 9.1 IP. 12 Ks but 11 H (2 HR), and 8 BB. Command issues; we’ll see if he’s figured that out yet. So far in AAA he’s at 13 IP with 16 Ks and 4 BB. Jury’s still out...

Meanwhile the Dodgers lost a Kershaw start and didn't lose any ground to the Dbacks who were playing the Padres.

to me, this is a HUGE week for the Dodgers. They get Miami and San Francisco for 4 while Arizona gets East Coast swing with Phillies and Nationals.

RE: 2018 MLB Season Thread
I don't know how the Angels have done it so far, but I was not impressed. One team that's hot on the heels of them and the Mariners is the A's. Look at their OPS+'s
Lucroy- 83
Olson- 112
Lowrie- 181
Semien- 103
Chapman- 159
Joyce- 145
Smolinski- (-13) ....oof
Piscotty- 111
Davis- 146

Clearly the offense and bullpen are carrying them because the starting rotation outside of Manaea (who's been insane in the membrane) has basically been doo doo.

Nah, it's too early and there are still too many other things to worry about than the division lead.

Here's what's huge to me:
- Kenley Jansen. Last night he started out sketchy but finished strong. Not ready to call him solved.
- Rich Hill. He was crappy before he cracked the fingernail.
- Justin Turner. He's throwing and swinging a bat, but not catching and not hitting live pitching.
- Logan Forsythe. Rumor was he was going to start throwing this weekend. And he wasn't hitting a lick before the DL.
- Puig. BABIP is moving up but nothing else is. wRC+ of 58. He's still top 25ish in exit velo, but...

Fix 2-3 of those 5 and I'll start worrying about AZ.

A little bit of smoke and mirrors (BABIP allowed of .288) and early season scheduling (A's, struggling Cleveland, Rangers, Royals). Red Sox exposed them.

Yeha, that doesn't surprise me. They lost two of three to the Giants and Ohtani DH'd in two of those games (meaning they had their full lineup). They'll compete for the second WC simply because they have Trout and Ohtani, but I wouldn't expect much more than that.

even if you get things fixed you don't want to fall too far behind. Especially with 6 more games coming up vs Arizona.... If Arizona is up by 5 games entering those 6 games and Arizona goes even 4-2 that's a 7 game gap. I don't care when in the season that is- it's still 7 games. Arizona isn't going to go away.

Also, Arizona has a brutal 9 games in conjunction with the 6 Dodgers games in these next 15. @ Philly, @ Nationals, and 3 Astros. Dodgers in that stretch 3 Marlins, 4 @ Giants, and 3 @ Padres. If the Dodgers don't make up ground now, Arizona's schedule will get easier and the Dodges will be more difficult.

I think he's saying he's not even worrying about the division, because if the Dodgers can't fully fix their issues, it won't matter what Arizona's schedule looks like because the Dodgers won't be able to catch them.

right. All I'm saying is that even if the Dodgers fix their issues, if they can't take advantage of this period where they have a huge schedule advantage- and Arizona survives this period- eventually the Dodgers will have a brutal part to the schedule and Arizona will have an easy part- and then things could be too late at that point....

Also you have the Kershaw situation where even though he looks great, there's going to always be that question with him. 1 thing the Hill injury did was allow him to start again on Wednesday at home and avoid having 3 straight road starts.... That's pretty big IMO for him.
