Grand Canyon University Gets Higher Learning Commission Blessing for Non-Profit Path
https://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/news...rofit.html

GCU has passed the first and large hurdle getting the Higher Learning Commission's approval for its path toward non-profit. Next is the Dept of Ed and AZ State Board approvals. Shouldn't be an issue and it looks like GCU is on its way to being a non-profit again.
This was helped with Purdue Univ buying for-profit Kaplan University creating Purdue Global.

WCC here they come???

No. WCC is full of elite colleges. Unless GCU pumps up their admission standards and dumps most online, no chance in hell.

True since that is the Universities Presidents issue. However, the some WCC AD's have stated they like GCU.

If anything, they could open for the MW to fill the gaping hole in the footprint and add GCU. Having PHX in the inventory would be beneficial to the MW. Although, I think GCU wants to be in the WCC unless they want higher aspirations and add football down the road to be part of the MW.

I'd want GCU in the conference with BYU because they have resources and have shown a commitment to athletics. They also draw good attendance. Nice potential.

It's a manageable road tip and tons of BYU fans and alumni in the Phoenix area.

I'm afraid that this simply might be an attempt for GCEI to begin to legally discriminate against minorities in hiring and admissions again. Remember, for profit entities in certain areas are covered by non-discrimination laws that non-profits can be exempted from.

And the last time they tried the "non-profit" route it was really just a risible sham where the non-profit was just funneling money to the for profit consulting arm that called all the shots.

The WCC might not care about GCEI reinstituting discriminatory employment and admission practices, however (they have BYU and Pepperdine - two discriminatory institutions).

We shall see how this develops. Lets see if they change their employment and admissions polices again to begin discriminating and if the non-profit plan really does make the school non-profit with no required contracts to the owners. From the article. It looks like a rehash of their 'phony non-profit' attempt from a while back.

And it looks like the for profit CEO will be a leader of the "non-profit" entity. This appears to be just a sham.

Basically GCEI would still be controlled by the for profit company. Still for profit. Who else is going to hire this new consortium to run their schools? No one.

Well if the WCC loses Gonzaga, then this status change will make GCU much more attractive to the Presidents of the WCC. Some coaches and ADs were already positive on them.

LOL, if GCU added a team chaplain that would get them even more in sync with the WCC schools.

I don't see the WCC expanding anytime soon. Back filling if they lose two schools sure. But if just one school, they could well sit pat. There isn't a school out there that improves their chances of a 2nd bid without Gonzaga.

If WCC loses Zags then they’ll take former member Seattle

Don't bet on it. GCU is seen to have much more athletic potential than SU. But then again I think if the WCC loses Gonzaga they will also lose BYU, being it appears to be almost a package deal, in which case they'd likely invite both schools, making that last statement moot.

My guess is Seattle and Denver are at the top of the WCC's list in the event they need to add a member or two, and then it gets murky after that. Down the road, if GCU got non-profit status back, they may wind up on the list for lack of other options, but I don't see the University presidents agreeing on them at this point.

Gonzaga's biggest complaint about the WCC, the majority of the schools don't care enough about athletics to improve their programs. Those majority of President's Gonzaga are pointing a finger at will not invite GCU, a school they see as being substandard. They would take Seattle, a school that would fit in nicely. GCU will never be in the WCC.

If they also lose BYU, they will hold at 9.

University President's decide who they want in their leagues, not ADs.

And you don't really think GCU could actually get an invite to the Mountain West? Chance = ZERO

Once they get Non-profit status, the chances to the MW are more than ZERO. Like I said, having Phoenix in the MW footprint is a big deal and they do have a lot of support in the PHX area with an enthusiastic fan/student base. Along with beautiful facilities, they are a diamond in the rough that is getting polished each year.
Will it happen with a year? No...but in a few years I can see that.
If the MW is open to non-football schools, they are high on the list.

To quote Jack Reacher, more than never, less than always.

Still that's a long shot, I'm sure there is much more to the decision than impact on athletics.

Nope, zero. The only non-FB playing school the MWC will ever look at is Gonzaga. Quality institution going to the NCAA tournament for the 20th year in a row. To pretend that GCU can be used in the same sentence as Gonzaga is laughable. NMSU, a pier institution with Colorado State has a much better shot then GCU, and they are a long shot to ever get in.

Not to mention that UTEP and possibly UTSA would probably agree to leave CUSA for the MWC. So even if the MWC went for 'marketz', GCEI wouldn't get in.

Who's more likely to invite Grand Canyon? The MW, who's been reluctant to take anyone without football up to now? Or the BW, who houses several of GCU's former conference opponents and sponsors the core olympic sports??
GCU would make for a nice #12.

I'm curious is FBS football is a long term goal of GCU? They could be the Liberty of the West.

I think the BW is going to be difficult. Even if they get approval to call themselves non-profit, everyone knows that GC will still be a sham non-profit, with the for profit 'management agency' controlling all the shots and making all the money. There's also the issue of private vs public too. All public schools in the BW. GC is very private. It also has a history of discrimination (which it might revert back to if it becomes legally - if not effectively - non-profit).

The WCC, which is comprised mostly of private, religious schools and which has 1 institution that directly discriminates and 1 that might, could be a possible (if unlikely for various other reasons) landing spot. I still think that GC's bizarre new profit/non-profit hybrid is not going to be seen as a good match.
