Kind of hard to say a person "outplayed" someone "head to head twice" unless the two players were actually matched up against one another mano - y - mano. In order for that to have happened either Elmore would have to play the forward position and match up with King (man-to-man), or King would have to play point guard and match up with Elmore (man-to-man). Neither of those things happened, so NO, Elmore didn't "outplay" King "head to head twice". In fact he didn't even do that once.

Now if you want to say Elmore led his team to victory twice over the other guy's team, then that is a fair statement, but since neither of them spent much time guarding the other the rest of that is simply wrong.

Edit: Forgot to add ... Congratulations to King for winning the award. Side note - Elmore is a really good player too and was a worthy candidate for the award as well.

Congratulations on having the first one and done POY in the history of CUSA. The trophy shall forever more be referred to as "The Ringer."

You might want to check on last years' POY

Doesn't change the validity of my statement. They still had the first. It's the same reason Kelly didn't win it 3 years ago. They said they won't give it to a one and done. And now they've done it twice for MTSU.

Kelly didn't win it because he wasn't the best player in the conference. If anybody has beef about not winning POY in 15-16 it's Trey Freeman.

RE: Nick King - POY
Here is why Elmore was not the MVP/POY. Elmore was nothing short of terrible in three road games against the top three teams in the league. In fact, he didn't have what would be considered a great game against any of the top three even at home. He padded the "look at me" stats by taking lots of shots and shooting free throws. Against the rest of the league he further padded stats in a similar way against lesser competition but did little to help Marshall win games on the road in conference play. Outside of the MT game, Marshall was 4-4 on the road in league play.

Key Numbers Against MT, ODU, and wkcc
FG Road: 16-of-48 (33%)
3-PT Road: 2-of-20 (20%)

FG Home: 18-of-43 (42%)
3-PT Home: 6-of-18 (33%)

Overall, Elmore shot 37% from the field and hit a paltry 21% of his threes in the big games against the top three. His best game on the road probably came against UAB and his team still lost. The point about winning championships and even best player awards is that you have to do it consistently and you have to do it on the road. Elmore did not. Plain and simple. Putting up gaudy numbers in points scored and assists is cool and all, but it's hardly the criteria for assessing the Player of the Year - particularly for someone who always has the ball in his hands. His most impressive stat is that his team was able to win two games against Middle Tennessee, which can probably be attributed more to the fact that Burks was actually more efficient and other players stepped up. Burks was the game changer in the two MT games not Elmore. Otherwise, Elmore was 0-4 against the other two and as referenced above didn't exactly put the place on fire.

In the one big non-conference opportunity he had to show out he was 6-of-17 from the floor including 1-of-6 from three against Xavier.

You compare that to the consistency night in night out that King displayed including the clutch moments both at ODU and wkcc and this was a no-brainer, which everyone but Marshall fans can see. King's only two bad games of the year came against Marshall, but that itself wasn't enough to elevate Elmore. Lastly, stats are for losers. A player's direct impact to winning is what makes one an MVP and the other one not. And no one had BOTH the stats and also hit bigger, clutch shots in key moments than King.

Cherry pick all you want. For example , you “forgot” to mention that Elmore had 9 assists and only one TO against top 5 Xavier. It does not change the fact that Elmore is the best player in CUSA and was robbed.

King named one of five Karl Malone award finalists along with Ayton from Arizona, Bagley from Duke, Maye from UNC, and Daum from SDSU.

You realize the tournament is different than the season right?

If he would have done what he's doing tonight in the big games during the season he might have won the regular season POY.

He's definitely earned the tournament MVP. Crazy he's hitting them from damn near half court.

I don't know how you can say that. He damn near put up his season averages in the tourney.

King was great, but I think he won solely because he was the best player on the best regular season team.

Jon happens to be the best player on the championship team. I think he'll take that.

Now, let's all hope MTSU gets their fair shake...
