Quo...you and I saw that several times in the old Big East. my team included.

I picked that Gerry McNamara team to win it all and they bowed out Round 1 (but they came through in my only correct national champ pick with Carmelo!).

Yep, it has happened to everyone, except maybe UConn back then, LOL. The Big East tournament was (arguably still is) just so emotional that it's hard for teams to just keep it in perspective and remember that the NCAA is the real goal. The atmosphere at the Garden brings out 110% effort.

Played on a hockey rink in Worcester with condensation and a VT kid who threw up a 3 pointers late to kill us.

Sure, but that also makes it so exceptional, right?

I re-watched the 30/30 on that the other night. Even though I too remember their entire run, it is still amazing 35 years later. They survived a season's worth of drama just to win the ACC, and then they had to do it again in the NCAA. And they did it.

Considering both conference and dance, it's still the most remarkable and unlikely playoff run in any sport in my lifetime.

That was a great run, but the NCAA ruined the game afterwards, basically eliminating 1 and 1.

They beat Gonzaga earlier in the season. They obviously were underachieving for whatever reason, be it injuries or out of sync. Now that they're in, they're dangerous.

Just a pet peeve of mine, but isn't Nevada the Mountain West Champs and San Diego State the Mountain West Tournament Champs? That might not be how the conference does, but it always annoys me when people (including many Big Ten fans) refer to the Big Ten Tournament winner as the conference champ.

It's really the culture of the conference, and I don't know what the MW's is. E.g., in conferences like the B1G, and PAC, where the tourney only goes back 20 years or so, the tradition is that the regular season winner is the "real" champion and the tournament champion is of lesser status, even though it gets the auto-bid.

In contrast, as Jay Bilas was describing the other night, in the ACC, the culture historically emphasizes the conference tournament. He said it was only recently that they started giving the regular season winner a trophy too, and that in his day only the tourney winner was regarded as champ- any ACC school that had the best regular season record but lost the tournament but still tried to claim to be an ACC 'champ' would have been scoffed at.

Ditto, in the Big East, the emphasis has always been on the tournament winner as well. E.g., up until the 2013 split, the regular season winner got a trophy that said "Men's Basketball Regular Season Champion" whereas the tournament winner's trophy said "Men's Basketball Champion", without any qualifier. The newer post-2013 trophy does now say "tournament champion", but IMO the culture still emphasizes who wins the tournament title.

I thought McNamara was in 2006? That was when Syracuse lost to Texas A&M in Jacksonville in the first round, Syracuse was flat - partially because it was one of those 1st round Thursday games that didn't even start until 10:15 PM ET.

McNamara was there from 2002-06. I think the one being referred to was in 2005, as they also made the Big East final that year.

And also won it.

Hope SDSU gets a couple wins, they look good.
