Why is the NIT magically acceptable and the CIT not?
The difference is the caliber of team that participates in it, as well as perception. The first four out of the NCAA tournament get an auto-bid to the NIT, and winning it carries the insinuation of either "they shoulda been in the tournament" or "they're going to be a force next year". CIT, CBI, and the brief Vegas Ocho have no such reputation.

Correct. The NIT is directly connected to the NCAA. Thus, the better teams will always fill the NIT before any other consolation tournament. It's also the reason why the NCAA chooses to have rule experimentation there.

Not to mention that the NIT is by invitation only, whereas CIT is pay-to-play.

This.
The majority of the top 100 teams are in one of the first two tournaments.

and theres no way we'd sell 5000 tickets to a C tournament game. Maybe if it was the championship. Our fan base just has higher expectations.

Agree, the 5,000 ticket claim was from the Marshall guy. We'd sell maybe 2,000 if we are lucky.

I'd go so far as to say that at this point, the CBI and CIT are fourth-tier tournaments, with a gap where a third-tier tourney would slot.
I made this point somewhere, but the list of teams that chose not to participate in any sub-NIT tournaments (all the schools in the P5, Big East, A10, AAC, Mountain West and CAA, among others) would make for a a far better tournament than the CBI or CIT. I think that's kind of what the Vegas 16 was supposed to be, using the allure of a destination to grab those schools and become the new third tournament, but obviously that didn't work out.
The CBI and CIT are essentially early offseason practices/scrimmages for low-major programs and less-established mids. We've crossed the event horizon for name programs taking part.
