Idea for conference tournament site
The tourney is a way better deal than Disney. Shorter lines, cheaper tix & fewer people screaming.

Idea for conference tournament site

Smoothie King wanted crazy money.
Huntsville is pretty close to the geographic center of the league. Chattanooga is close to the center of the schools that were top third of RPI

Huntsville.
About the same as Chattanooga. We need somewhere that the east team fans can more easily drive to, especially considering all 4 top seeds were from the east and likely could be next year also. We need to quit hosting things in Texas just to make it convenient for our worthless league office.

Smudge's idea of Florida is pretty good though... Less than 200 bucks for a round trip flight from Norfolk to Miami, which is extremely reasonable.
Nashville is too far to drive (11 hours), and flights are in the ~$325 range which would prevent many families from going.
If you're looking to Florida as a potential location, just look at the AAC the few years it's been Orlando, it's been nothing short of a failure. Even with the cheap flights and everything to do in Orlando fans just aren't showing up.
Right. I don't get why any of us care where it is, because fans still aren't going. If you get within 3 hr driving distance of 3-4 schools, then that will be the best we can do. If we could alternate between Charlotte and New Orleans, then I think we'd get about as many road travelers as we could. Not many are going on a plane ride.

That's why it needs to be at a team's home location. One of the more prominent basketball programs in the conference.
It's the only way anyone will go to the games.

South Florida would be a fun option.
Do the first round on campus and have the quarterfinals onward at the BB&T Center in Ft Lauderdale. Hold the women’s tourney at FAU or FIU.

4's to few IMO. Make it 6 with the top 2 getting a bye to the semi's. Make the play in games the week before.

My idea was 8 teams to play Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

RE: Idea for conference tournament site
I’ll be honest I haven’t read through this thread or all the other ones with suggestions to improve the tournament. Here’s my idea and excuse me if it has already been mentioned. Let’s scrap the whole conference tournament = auto bid. We tell the NCAA that the regular season champion is the auto bid winner. Then we have three separate round robin tournaments held at various host universities. For example Tournament 1 held at Murfreesboro would be MTSU (33) WKU (39) ODU (78) and Marshall (87). Tournament 2 held at Birmingham would be UAB (155) UTSA (186) La Tech (182) and USM (207). Tournament 3 (optional)held at Denton would be UNT (235) FAU (275) UTEP (293) and FIU (295).
These mini round robin tournament are more of RPI boosters and resume building games. The tier 1 tournament guarantees you to top 100 games sometimes two top 50 games. If you win it could be enough to get you in and if you lose it shouldn’t affect your overall resume. In most years the participants from the tier 1 tournament should end up in the NCAA/NIT. The other two tiers are for those CBI/CIT young bubble teams.

1. Realign the conference to only include schools within 100 miles of the Atlantic or Gulf
2. Put the postseason tournaments on a cruise ship
3. Move the ship to the highest-seeded school's closest port after every game
4. ???
5. PROFIT

Let me guess, this idea was pitched by the Underpants Gnomes, right? They're probably better at marketing and business plan development than Judy.

UTEP puts on a good tourney, Birmingham not so much.
If CUSA could find an arena free in Nashville, It might make for a good rotation of El Paso, Nashville and Frisco

Thanks for the idea. It's definitely something different. I would have to disagree on this one though. I think if you do an auto bid, you make it an auto bid. I'm not sure that there would be tons of motivation for any team beyond maybe the three to five seeds to really play hard.

RE: Idea for conference tournament site
I made this point in another thread.
Our tournament needs to be in a landmark location, and labeled as a Semi-Final tournament.
You have the opening round on Tuesday with teams 5 through 12, highest ranked teams get home court (on campus).
For the quarter-final round on Thursday, highest seeds keep home court (on campus).
Saturday and Sunday are at a neutral location. Ideally Nashville, Birmingham, Dallas or Charlotte. My preference is Nashville, as a great portion of our conference could be within a day's drive.
And considering these will be Saturday and Sunday games, you may have decent turnout since they wouldn't be during the work week.

either of those work also.....
if we don't change the format, the location has to move somewhere in the center......
however, I like what you guys + drunk's thinking better......
that's the better method for cusa and the fans moving forward....

RE: Idea for conference tournament site
I don't think a central location is going to work for a conference for this type of geography. ODU and UTEP are 3,000 miles apart, and though I like being in a conference with UTEP, at least one of those fanbases are not going to show for the conference tournament no matter where you have it.
Perhaps we should divide into East and West just like we do with football, and have two central locations (perhaps the home of the highest seed). For example this past year:
MTSU, ODU, WKU, Marshall, FAU, and FIU all play the first 3 rounds at MTSU.
UTSA, UAB, UNT, LT, USM, and UTEP all play the first 3 rounds at UTSA.
Rice and Charlotte stay home.
Then the East and West Champion can play for the autobid at the home of the highest remaining seed (maybe with a day off before for travel).
This particular year was top-heavy for the East, but this could work:
It would decrease travel for both teams and fans, increase fan attendance, look better on TV, and reward the best regular season team with a huge advantage.
Thoughts?
