2018 Spring Practice
Moving on from Basketball performance appraisals

Spring practice starts tomorrow!

Madia says we have an estimated 14 starters to replace, let’s go with that in general terms.

Go Dukes!

RE: 2018 Spring Practice
Does anyone know of any injuries that might affect (projected) starters? I know guys were banged up from the season, but can't remember anything lingering this far down the line.

RE: 2018 Spring Practice
I think the depth is good at most positions but the competition will be fierce this spring and summer for PT. Nothing like competition for PT to raise the level of play.

RE: 2018 Spring Practice
Spring practice is a great time for rumors, perhaps blasphemous rumours in fact, lies, damn lies and statistics.

I'm hearing O'Kelly is moving to running back and will enter spring practice at the top of the depth chart. Marcus Marshall is moving to nose guard. Jimmy F'n Moreland is now our #1 punter while Ethan Ratke will compete for Stinnie's vacated left tackle spot. Houston is scrapping our entire offensive scheme and we are moving to power-I which will include Cole Johnson at fullback (blocking for O'Kelly of course) and we will utilize 4-TE sets.

On defense, Trott is trying something new. We are ditching the 4-3 defense and moving to a 7-9-6 defense. He figures our opponents aren't good at math and CAA refs are clowns so perhaps he can get away with 22 defenders in purple on the field. It may just work.

Ahhhh, spring. Welcome back, football. At least for a few weeks. As a family member once told me about 20 yeas ago... "the difference in the SEC and the rest of college football is the number of RV's in the parking lot...at the spring game." Fans will read far too much into the spring game. And, that's OK because what else do we have to do? But, rest assure, we will collectively dwell on the negative afterwards. If the offense scores at will then doom will be on the horizon that our defense will take a major step backwards (and that 7-9-6 scheme isn't enough). And, if Trott's guys dominate, then our offense will spell doom for the upcoming season. No matter what, we are doomed.

04-cheers

Decent article with some quotes from HCMH on the quarterback competition. Our old quarterback Schor-ly will be hard to replace, but we have some talent!

Wear Purple, you're hired to be Madia's eventual replacement. Don't you ever leave us for the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

A 2nd opportunity to snag another DL transfer would be after Spring ball...

Dukes add a defensive line transfer from Wake Forest. Per Madia in the DNR. Two good articles today reviewing the first day of practice.

Can never have too many linemen. The competition brings out the best in players and keeps them fresh throughout the year.

RE: 2018 Spring Practice
Looks like more of a DE than a DT at 6'3", 255 lbs. Did notice that DT Ryan Etheridge is no longer listed on the roster. I believe he was very close to graduating even before Spring semester started.

Gonna need Mike Greene to show us something this year at DT. His emergence (and hopefully someone else too) will be crucial for depth. Rondell Carter and Juwan Moye are both converted DEs whose interior experience has been more situational rather than as every down guys. We should be speedy on the D-line, if nothing else.

3 star out of Fayetteville, NC.
Looks like his top offers in 2015 were Wake, ECU, & JMU.

Played last 2 seasons in 22 games (was suspended 3). Sounds like a 2 deeper according to his WF bio (doesn’t include 2017 #s)

Wild guess:
DT starters: Rondell Carter & Moye.
2 deep+: Greene, Atariwa, and Thurston, the true freshman from Louisia.

DE starters Darrious Carter and either Terrell or Black. Daka rounding out the 2 deep.

In other words it’s possible the starting DTs could be former Rutgers & UVA transfers, and the top 3 DEs could be former UVA, UVA & WF transfers..

With possibly a UVA transfer starting at ILB to boot..

From what I have heard (live in Louisa).....Coach Houston and Coach Hanson are planning on Thurston contributing in the rotation as a FR.

RE: 2018 Spring Practice
Quotes from Coach Houston. DNR.

“We don’t have as much experience but I feel probably as good about our offensive line as I have at any point in my time here. And I feel really, really good about our d line. We may be young, but we have a lot of depth and ability. And a lot of fight in us.”

“Percy Agyei-Obese had a great practice and he has a different skill set than others. I was pleased with the way he played last fall. He’s doing all the right things to try to put himself in a position to play more in the fall”.
