What about attendance figures for each conference tournament?

Hasn't been a great year for the PAC

Fortunately when you have a monopoly on the West Coast and nobody able or willing to poach your schools then it doesn't matter

It's an illustration of the power of the established basketball network. Fox is not known for college basketball. CBS is.

Both games were on over-the-air TV, but CBS had been showing college hoops all day, giving it a lead-in.

More casual fans go to ESPN or CBS for college basketball. A person has to be a committed Big East fan to find their games on Fox. A person running a TV in a bar or restaurant is more likely to park their TV on ESPN or CBS than Fox during basketball season.

The same thing happens in college football. Games on ESPN networks generally outrate games on Fox networks.

In the meantime, Fox has given the Big East a great financial deal. They'll take the money and run.
This.

It will be interesting to see what the ratings will be for the AAC if they move away from ESPN. We know CBS won't give them many games in football, and the Big 10 is taking back their basketball slots next year.

NBC makes the most sense to me. Thats an OTA Network than could give the AAC some nice saturday slots while using NBC-Sports to show most of the games.

My guess is you'll see the AAC split between ESPN and NBC (about 25 games each). Then CBS-Sports (too cheap to win a bidding war), ESPN-Plus, or a streamer will grab the scraps.

Yeah yeah yeah, people have been talking about NBC for years. I'll believe it when I see it.

True. But—they did bid for the AAC and made a strong play for the Pac12 a year or so before that. They like huge cornerstone properties or “bargains”...which is why I think they will be interested in a product that delivers 50-75% of P5 number for 20-25% of P5 cost.

PAC should go to 18 with Texas, Tech, TCU, OU, OSU, Kansas

That would solve their problems IMO.

UCLA looks flat so far against the Bonnies. It doesn't make sense that a program with UCLA's resources is struggling in a First Four game. It really confuses me.

Bonnies can't shoot, but UCLA looks lost against this zone. Turnovers everywhere for this team - are UCLA young?

Their rotation consists of two seniors, a junior, two red-shirt sophomores, and three freshmen, so they aren't terribly young. However, when their threes aren't falling or their defense struggles, things can get ugly. They did not look good at all against the zone.

#Pac12 in major revenue sports in 2017-18:
- no CFP team
- bowl record (1-8) was worst ever
- two at-large bids, and both are First Four

They're in deep doo-doo.

These things tend to run in cycles. We've seen it in this decade with B1G football and SEC basketball. What the B1G and SEC had were successful TV networks, which gave them the income needed to fund coaching hires and facility improvements. Those, in turn, resulted in an improved product.

For TV, the Pac is already handicapped by the time difference. Their issues with their TV network are glaring. It has not generated the needed revenue relative to the other power conferences. The Pac needs to improve its TV situation so it can improve its on-field/court product in the two major revenue sports.

BTN, SECN = successful. P12N = not so much.
What a mistake. They passed on the Texhoma four and now they are out of suitable expansion candidates. No way Texas and their pals go west now.

RE: Pac 12 blues
They didn't pass, Texas backed out.

Alford has one more year based on strong recruiting and a sweet 16 run last year. But he needs to turn top 10 talent into a top 10 team, not a top 50 team.

These things come in cycles. Pac-12 has a lot of angry money right now. The pressure will build to shake things up at a number of schools over the next 18-24 months, both Football and Basketball. Shake out is likely coming in P12 HQ as well in that time frame.

Considering they play in a nonESPN network, having 1.5 million people watch the final is remarkable. As for the Pac-12, they’ll always struggle in getting casual viewers outside the West Coast. Even in their footprint, they compete against different entertainment options in an area known for its outdoor activities. Unless half of the schools alumni and fan base move to the East Coast, not much will change on their end.

Yes, a far better indicator of conference strength and popularity is tournament attendance.

Big East sold out three sessions at MSG, there were probably more fans at the Big East final than attended the AAC tournament in its entirety.

Exactly. The AAC semis did well. The AAC Hou-Wichita semi final game on Saturday drew more viewers than the Big East FINAL and Pac12 FINAL.

Did anyone see the game live? The Big East final had a raucous sellout crowd in the mecca of basketball.

The AAC tournament seemed like it was filmed before a studio audience in a mostly empty blimp hanger. 04-cheers

Look, nobody thinks that Houston vs Wichita has more brand appeal than Villanova vs Providence or Arizona vs USC, so obviously network issues were at play there. That said, of course it is to the AAC's credit that CBS wanted to broadcast those games on their OTA network.

RE: Pac 12 blues
This Big East vs AAC sniping is getting really old really fast. Big East fans want the AAC to drop off the face of the earth and vice versa. If Big East fans don't like that the AAC beat them due to network- well guess what- who chose the network? That's right, the Big East. So they get what they deserve. To not beat the MWC for the title game has to be a concern. But the AAC definitely needs to figure out the attendence part of things for the conference tourney. BOTH conferences have some warts.

Both conferences have a lot of good things. I wouldn't want to be in a bracket with Nova, Xavier, Cincy, Wichita, or Houston. Or quite frankly even any of the other 4 Big East teams even with them being in the 8-10 pit of misery. I can't wait to see all of them in the tourney starting tomorrow.
