Yeah, the travel cost argument doesn't impress me. If Marshall were invited to a new conference with Boise, Houston, Cincy, UCF, and Oregon they'd pay those travel costs gladly.

This highlights that its not really about how far you travel, its really about WHO you are traveling to get to.

Worry about who first...and only then consider travel costs.

Yeah, except that ridiculous scenario is never going to happen and Marshall is not getting an AAC invite.

They'd only do it if there was the expectation of increased revenues though. I have serious doubts that traveling to Texas several times a year is really increasing the money coming into ODU.

I didn't say that you did. All I'm saying is that yes, Marshall would most likely pay the travel costs if it were worth its wile (TV money, etc.). So I agree with you there. The problem is that CUSA is so far flung that it becomes cost prohibitive to travel to El Paso, San Antonio, Denton, etc.

It would be MUCH easier to travel to Boone, Statesboro, Myrtle Beach, Troy, etc... and those are all destinations in which a lot of Marshall fans would make the trip to see.

+1. If the Big 12 stays together I think we'll see this eventually. It would be easy travel. The basketball tournament would be a much bigger event than it is now.

My argument was not against any particular arrangement. My argument was against using travel costs as your prime motivator for conference realignment decisions.

I'd rather pay travel costs to be in a league with Georgia Southern than travel down the street to be in a conference with a school that doesn't have a real football culture.

Its the same with markets. I'd rather be associated with a decent program in Ruston or Hattiesburg than some school in the New York City media market that doesn't really care about its athletics.

Basing conference realignment on one factor is an error.

Agreed.
I base my factors on tradition, as in traditional programs. Who do you want to be associated with, Coastal Carolina or LT? Georgia State or UAB? Hell lets use the MAC since we were there a few times, same examples but use Ohio, Toledo and NIU? All of a sudden a reformed league of FBS newbies doesn't appeal that much to an average fan. I am not fan of that idea at all. I kinda get the App St. and Georgia Southern inclusions, they are newbies like ODU but they also are very committed to football and have been for a very long time. Tradition and Money was the biggest two factors we left the MAC to begin with, to be associated with USM, ECU, Memphis, Houston, it was considered an upgraded schedule that should have drawn more live gate........had it not been for the Mark Snyder experience it probably would have worked out that way. So it does matter imo. Markets never mattered, whoever thought that mess up needs a swift kick in the arse. Are there alternatives to whats being presented in this topic, airport meeting or go back to the MAC. The others would just have us back peddling after all the years of trying to ascend.

They'd only do it if there was the expectation of increased revenues though. I have serious doubts that traveling to Texas several times a year is really increasing the money coming into ODU.

Look at Boise as an example. They were going to join the Big East and were willing to pay the cost and travel across the continent to play those teams and get BE money. Once the BE split and the AAC was formed, Boise opted out because the cost and effort was not worth it to play the AAC teams like it was for the Big East.
