From the ashes: The 1970 Wichita State and Marshall football tragedies
A great read, I never realized the tragedies were that close together. Marshall and the class act Wichita State did by sharing the proceeds of the benefit originally schedule for Wichita State.
Quote:Wichita State and Marshall meet Friday in the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament, but the universities have been forever bound by two plane crashes in 1970, 44 days apart, that took a combined 106 lives. This story originally appeared in The Eagle on Oct. 1, 2000, the 30th anniversary of the tragedies.
The healing process for two universities began with music and laughter in a packed Levitt Arena on a chilly Saturday night. “A Night of Stars,” held Nov. 28, 1970, was supposed to be a benefit for the victims of a horrific airplane crash carrying members and supporters of the Wichita State football team. The accident took the lives of 31 people.
Unbelievably, the football team from Marshall suffered another crash with even more people killed, 75, just two weeks before the show. It remains the worst sports-related air disaster in American history.
So WSU representatives agreed to share the money raised that night with Marshall, a school located in Huntington, W.Va.

Other things about the Marshall WSU Game:
*Gregg Marshall was an asst at Marshall 96-98
*WSU Asst Coach Donnie Jones was Marshall's HC 07-10
*WSU Big Man Rashard Kelly came down to WSU and Marshall before committing to WSU
*Gregg Marshall contacted Jon Elmore 36 hours after he left VMI to see if he was interested to come play for him
*Gregg Marshall made a late push to sign CJ Burks
*Early in Jannson Williams and Darius George's recruitment Gregg Marshall was interested in both, there is a picture out there somewhere with Dan D'Antoni, Mark Cline (Marshall asst) and Gregg Marshall setting on the end line watching Darius George at Big Shots Elite
