UNCG was the underdog but man, they gagged it up in the last minute. We should have had our first upset today.

change the title of this and it will be. Refs had some tough calls against UNCG also down the stretch

If a 1/16 upset was ever gonna happen, this was it. Meaning maybe we won't ever see a 1/16 upset.

The 7-10 and 8-9 games are brutal. Anyone can win those. 11 over 6 or 12 over 5 are modest upsets. Any 13 or lower seed winning would be huge. SF Austin is a really well coached team, and the only deep seed I think is really dangerous - but they drew Texas Tech who are playing really well.

I wouldn't say Penn and Kansas is the barometer for if/never 1/16 game. Put that game in Pittsburgh rather than Wichita, for starters, and let's see a 1 play an under-seeded 16 in someone else's backyard.

Both teams didn't deserve that. At least the committee had the decency to put Kansas close to home.

There are all sorts of politics going on between seeds 4-13, I feel. Penn's the one 16 seed who probably has a gripe that it deserved something better. But, this is a new dimension for seeding, I think...completely skew teams a line or so from 7-14 and do so in a way where it clearly favors the higher seeds, 1-4. Really, it's the top 4 lines who SHOULD be protected the first weekend. That's going to happen pretty much for all but Purdue, should they get Butler in Detroit. And, pretty sure Arizona is being sent a message with their draws. All but 2 out of 16 1-4's getting a decent pull the first weekend is pretty good, imo...just, don't look at the seeding past that point.

Kansas still likely would have won, no matter where the game was. I'll give you 5-10 points, meaning they likely win by 8 rather than 16. A 1/16 upset hasn't happened for a reason.

It's not supposed to. What I don't understand is, why kind of test it in this way we just had? Cheap ratings grab or something?

If we start baiting the game with teams who have no business in the 16-line, it's going to happen. That's my point with this game. It's not like Penn doesn't play anyone. Every year they get Nova, Temple, St. Joe's, and La Salle. Even if they don't win any of those, they know what it's like to play good, if not great/top teams every year. A lot of 16's may not have any business being in D1. Putting Penn there was just dumb. Plain old dumb.

I'd say the committee protected Duke again. Iona or Bucknell should be the 16, and Duke should have gotten Penn or Bucknell instead, and Kansas Iona. But, god forbid you put Duke or UNC in ANY unfavorable geographic draw.

Agreed, Iona, Fullerton or Lipscomb made more sense.
