Here are the ratings...that game was the top rated cable game but behind all the CBS games.

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/sk...-2018.html

even ahead in the 18-49 of 2 of the CBS games.

And #5 looking at the chart of all 1st round games. Behind only the prime time CBS games. And #3 in 18-49's for rd 1.

A whole lot of parsing there...not exactly sure what you are saying. I just went off the rating.

The 18-49 demo has it's own separate rating. So they were even stronger in the younger demo(which is what the advertisers crave) than overall.

UMBC was #1 for all non-CBS games in both rounds. Says it all.

What it says is:

-- CBS cherry-picked the most popular games for Saturday and Sunday.

-- UMBC game was best-rated of the games CBS left behind.

-- Novelty sells well to sports fans, whether it's the first 16 to beat a 1 in March Madness, or the first Red Sox World Series win in over 80 years, or the first Cubs World Series win in over 100 years.

And the first point is exactly what CBS did. There is always one pod on Saturday and one on Sunday that CBS Picks that get to play their games before any of the other pods start. If you look at what CBS took, or intended to take, thy intentionally chose the best drawing games

Saturday they had Duke and Villanova, which are always going to be high profile, and Sunday they had Michigan State and Purdue, which considering the number of upsets on that side wasn't that bad.

CBS also ensured that they got the Kentucky/Arizona pod on CBS for Thursday, even though Zona got knocked out eliminating the big draw of the potential Saturday game.

The network has its greasy hands all over this tournament. I've always believed they've had a lot to say in the selection process, even though no one will admit it.

They honestly need to eliminate the foul out rule in basketball. If you wanna play physical, then make them shoot technical foul shots in increasing numbers after certain numbers, just like the bonus or double bonus. If not, at least call things consistently and not try to protect players trying to avoid a foul out.

The ABA used a no-foul-out rule in its last season. Every foul on a player after the sixth counted as a technical foul, and the fouled team got two free throws plus possession after the free throws. And because it was a technical foul, the fouled team could choose any of its 5 players on the floor to shoot the free throws, as with any "regular" technical foul. Keeping a player with 6 fouls in the game meant running the risk of giving up 4 or 5 points on a possession if that player committed another foul.

I'm not sure that's enough dis-incentive for a team that loves to hack its opponents, and I really dislike foul-fests, so how about that ABA no-foul-out rule plus, in addition to the technical foul if a player who is over the limit commits another foul, a player who has hit the limit (6 in pro, 5 in college) has to sit out for two minutes of game time before he can re-enter the game.

Just thinking...

First level: one technical foul shot, acting player sits out for at least 30 seconds before checking back in.

Second level: two technical foul shots, acting player sits out for a full minute.

Third Level: two technical/flagrant foul shots, player is ejected/fouled out after 10 fouls.

And rest assured anyone that commits that many fouls should be ejected rather than just sent to the bench.

Basketball really needs to get with the times, 5/6 fouls in today's physical and inconsistently called games isn't enough.

I really doubt CBS has any influence over the committee. There is no guarantee outcome of who advances and the field is so big. Unlike, ESPN with their football committee.

Also, CBS does get the best picks because they are the majority provider of the TV contract.

I think CBS' influence is over potential matchups. For example, West Virginia against Marshall was intentionally set up.

Do you think CBS needs to be involved in something like this? If I'm a committee member, I see the potential interest in that all on my own. No need for anyone to lean on me.

Maybe a little of both. That said, you'd be naive to think the TV execs don't call over to them and ask for them to set up as many made-for-TV matchups as possible.
