On defense, he leans on full court 1-2-2 that falls into a man to man in the half court. He has used a matchup zone too when in foul trouble.
He said in the PC he wants to run, jump and press. Most on the current roster can't do none of that. So let's hope he infuses that talent quickly or that game plan won't work.
Run. Jump. Press.
GOT IT!

My vote wouldn't change a bit no matter who Penny signs lol. He could have 1-10 5* recruits.
You see, elite recruits are a decided advantage in high school where a "dream team" can be formed with said team steamrolling the entire city league utilizing little more than street ball. That stuff doesn't work in college. This is what Memphis fans are going to learn (some at a very old age I presume).

Tell Cal that elite recruits won't work in college.
This post sound like the line from that old Aesop's fable "those grapes were probably sour anyway." Spoken by a fan whose team can't get that type of recruit.
I'll wait to see who we sign to be Tigers next season, but I'm expecting great things.
Cal signs elite recruits, call wins national championships; Penny signs elite recruits, therefore Penny will win national championships. GOT IT!
FYI: Gregg Marshall has said no to 5-star recruits before because he knew they wouldn't fit into his culture and system (his words). I know this is a difficult concept for Tiger fans to grasp, but there are more aspects to winning teams than merely the projected talent level of a player out of high school.

You could substitute Calipari's name in this post 10-15 years ago, and folks on these boards were saying the same thing. Talent wins in college.
Another inference that Penny is the next Calipari... CHECK!

This year was our historic low water mark and we finished over .500 in the league, you precious child.
Add Lomax and god knows who else and my god it's good to be a Tiger fan again.
Tubby went 40-26 in his two years at Memphis, 19-17 in conference play. Low water mark? I think not sir. Would you like me to enumerate all the "low water marks" in Memphis's history that were lower than Tubby's? You would? Of course not, no problem at all...
We talkin' 'bout low water marks man. What are we talking about? Water marks? We talkin' about low water marks, man. We talkin' 'bout water marks. We talkin' 'bout water marks. We ain't talking about the progress. We talkin' 'bout water marks, man.
RE: How many conference wins will Team Penny collect next year?
You're the low water mark of discourse, my dude.
Four straight years without an NCAA or NIT appearance is the absolute bottom of the barrel, and if you don't think so you've been sleeping rougher than I thought Wichita State had been.

Very nice dunk! I love posting videos of the Shocker's past greats too. But we aren't living in 2008; Cheatin' Cal ain't comin' back to Memphis. You have Penny now, a retired NBA player with a shoe contract, ownership interests in a barbershop and lawn care company, and some success luring children with cash and prizes from all over a metro area creating a high school team of ringers.
Penny will learn that his biggest problem in high school (getting a recruit to change school districts) will be his smallest in high-major college ball. He's going to be faced with a million rules and regulations that he must keep his all-stars in compliance with in order to avoid investigations and sanctions.
He's going to learn that in-game coaching decisions will be slightly more complex than encouraging his team to "run, jump, and press"... He'll have to learn to manage injuries, balance practice times, diffuse chemistry problems, cover up weaknesses, boost player's confidence, diminish player's egos, identify chemistry cancers, decode scouting reports and devise never-ending solutions to always changing challenges created by coaches with decades more experience and 100's more wins.
But yeah, recruiting thoroughbreds and teaching them to "run, jump, and press" might work too...

I was not inferring he was Calipari (or would have Cal's success). I said the same kind of posts were made when Cal started recruiting all of his 5* players, that oh it would never work, it's just street ball yadda yadda. I realize this was way before Wichita's time in the AAC, but was merely pointing out that we've heard that same line of thinking before.

Did dude pull up **** from the Zach Curlin era? We were still playing high schools and YMCAs back then. But yea, lets compare it to modern college sports

True.
Since the modern era (64 field team) though roughly half of your success came from Calipari. More than one out of three years you performed worse than Tubby. If we include the four vacated years the picture isn't pretty. Also of the three eras where you were good 82-89, 94-98, and 2000-2014 two came with sanctions. Essentially you were good for a seven out of eleven year period with out a proven cheater as the coach.

You are right. We really sucked between 89 and 94. That Elite 8 mustve just been a fever dream.

You went
18-12
17-15
23-11 Elite 8
20-12
13-16
According to Memphis fans 3 of those 5 years are not acceptable and one is ok.

The 70s feature an NCAA runner-up with Gene Bartow and Larry Finch...the 80s have a Final Four with Dana Kirk and Keith Lee...in the 90s Larry Finch returned as coach to lead Penny Hardaway and Elliot Perry to a Sweet 16 and Elite Eight...and of course what Cal did the 2000s
Memphis basketball has 4 decades of success, and was a known hoops power/name long before Calipari.
moreover, the NCAA never proved Rose didn't take the SAT. ETS simply said they could not prove or disprove that Rose took the test and the NCAA decided to rule him 'retroactively ineligible' after we had the audacity to crash the Final Four.

No. That set of years is right about our expectations.
Our expectations are simple:
5 to 6 NCAA's every 10 years
1 or 2 sweet 16s every 10 years
Compete for conference titles(top 4)
Recruit high level talent out of Memphis
In those years you mentioned we:
made 2 NCAA tourneys
Made an Elite 8
Was top 4 in conference every year except 1993(transition season)
Recruited 3 McDonalds All Americans plus the number 1 player in the country in Penny.

Btw, did anybody catch that the poll only goes to 18 wins? We won 21 this season, and have all coming back if they and Penny want, plus a handful of new guys. Bait is too obvious, not to mention there is no way to know until our roster is settled, as others have said.
