Combined with the three years already remaining on Johnson's current contract, Johnson is now signed to remain with the Yellow Jackets through the 2022 season.

Take heart Jackets.....figure at some point Venebles gets a HC offer he can't refuse and takes his GT gameplan with him, and there's always the chance that our starting QB goes down and the only backup we have has a torn shoulder muscle as well.

And what gameplan is that? Have a dumber but bigger and faster player in every position woo'ed in by bowling lanes and laser tag? It may work but I wouldn't brag or feel proud about it.

Evidently it's the gameplan to win games.

BTW, can you name the kid who was "woo'ed in" by bowling or laser tag?

Dabo openly brags about it. Before leaving the ribbon cutting ceremony he joked about expanding it. I probably wouldn't have found that too funny if I chipped in 7 figures of that $55m price tag.

So I take that as a no, you can't name the kid who was "woo'ed in" by bowling or laser tag.

If that's the silly game you have to play to reconcile that building, over $10m of which was issued as bonds against the taxpayers, with being a fiscal conservative, then you go ahead and play it.

I'm on board with salary and facility caps at this point. Big time CFB has no sense of self restraint or greater economic context. And as long as the factories play an arms race of decadence we're all going to hell on the same train.

CFB is the only professional sport without caps.

I am on the fence on this.... Not sure I would have offered the extension until after this season...

Maybe I have high standards for GT but I always thought y'all were above the Triple Option; not only that but I also believe y'all should be a strong contender to go the ACCCG every year too. GT is in a recruiting hot bed, has some of the richest CFB success in the ACC (National Championships throughout various eras of the sport), and in a winnable division. I always felt y'all were above Johnson, and it would be amazing if you could pick up Lane Kiffin. I truly believe he would elevate your program and probably would accept the job if offered.

Gun against your head; Kiffin or Johnson as your head coach, don't fool yourself. I get why people think Kiffin is damaged goods because of his shaky past however I feel after going through the "Nick Saban's School for Coaches Who Can't Coach Good and Want to Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too"; he will be one of the hottest names on the next coaching carousel.

If those are the choices, I choose Johnson. I still think he gets a bad wrap for being forced to operate with the second lowest budget in the ACC, lowest recruiting budget in the ACC until 1 year ago, smallest recruiting staff in the ACC until 1 year ago, and terrible defensive coordinators. The choice of Paul Johnson is a reflection of the the deep mismanagement of the GTAA under every athletic director they had since Homer Rice left up until Todd Stansbury came in less than 2 years ago.

Paul Johnson has been given peanuts and delivered two Orange Bowls and is actually fairly competitive on the field with UGAg, at least by Chan Gailey's 0-fer standards. Upon reconsideration of the personnel on the two sidelines, Paul is clearly hitting above his weight. The last person to go to an Orange Bowl at GT before Paul Johnson? Bobby Dodd.

I'd take PJ in a heartbeat. I've already written Bubba and suggested he hire PJ protege Jeff Monken.

RE: Report: Paul Johnson sought the Tennessee head coaching job
Guys who are younger than about 45 think of the triple option as a gimmick offense, or maybe a dinosaur. However, much like the dinosaurs, there was a reason the triple option ruled the college football world for a LONG time - it's very difficult to stop unless you have superior athletes. Now the challenge at GT is to make sure their athletes are good enough so that few teams will be athletically superior...

Wrong. If you play disciplined assignment defense you can stop it as well. Contrary to popular belief that's how Brent Venebles has essentially shut down GT's offense the past few years.

So what was it the first two times he got rung up for 450+?

It's called a learning curve. He probably hadn't seen that offense since high school. He adjusted and the results speak for themselves. If it was just a case of "out athlete" he'd be undefeated against the bees because there hasn't been a time in the Johnson era where GT had better athletes on offense than Clemson had on defense.

Even in the loss in 2014 where he had absolutely no help on offense his defense acquitted itself well enough.

Sorry that I wasn't clear earlier. What I meant was if you have inferior athletes you have no chance because you can't "hide" a player - the option will find him. If you have comparable athletes you might win, but you'll still give up lots of yards. On the other hand, if the defense has superior players who can (a) cover man-zero, and (b) beat those cut blocks, then you can stop it cold - provided you play sound assignment defense of course (a minimum).

If the offense is beating your defenders one on one, you're hosed against that scheme.

If the triple option wasn't a relic of the past Alabama would run it. Look at their team, they are beyond loaded in both offensive line, and running backs; they would be invincible! Let's call it what it is, the triple option is designed to eat up the clock and slowly acquire yardage to make up for talent deficiency. Kaplony is 100% correct that any team with a disciplined defense\ can play assignment (assuming at similar talent levels) will be able to stop it. On a side note UGA & Clemson schedules a triple option team each season before they play GT; helps the players get used to it and successfully mitigate it.

You are still wrong.

If your "inferior" athletes play assignment football you can stop the triple option. You don't have to play man zero, or even have a numbers advantage in the box if your team can maintain assignment discipline. What you have to do is:

A. attack the dive. (This is a much bigger key than people realize)
B. set the edge
and C. tackle is space.

I've got books on the shelf behind me that were written in the 70's talking about how to defend the option. Nothing has changed since that time. None of them start out with "out athlete". What is pounded is "Assignment, Assignment, Assignment" followed by "Attack, Attack, Attack"

When I helped coach HS ball we had two teams in our region who ran a similar style offense to GT. We had to drill into our players heads to play their assignment, not the football. If they couldn't play their assignment they would sit the pine. If your assignment is to hit the dive back, you hit the dive back every single play. If your assignment is the pitch man you hit him in the backfield or wore him like underwear if he tried to sneak out in a pattern. If your assignment is the QB you hit him every single play that you could get a legal hit on him.

Our corners were weak so we never felt comfortable with them in man to man so we always gave them a safety over the top. The trailing backers (because we were limited in size on the DL we played primarily a 3-4, sometimes some 3-3-5 schemes) were responsible for cleaning up anything that squirted out of containment.

Oh and don't fall for the narrative. DL players are fighting cut blocks in just about every single game. We ran a hybrid run & shoot/west coast offense where we were probably 65/45 pass to run and we cut block all the time because we lacked size on the OL. If your team isn't cutting then you need a new OL coach.
