Learn a trade. It can't be outsourced.

True for the most part but there are still trades jobs that could eventually be done by robots.

Learn to fix & program said robots. That's the way to go.

You cannot train unmotivated or low IQ people to program robots. That will be a high-skilled, high education field if it ever really comes to fruition.

A robot also can't come to my house and fix my HVAC or replace a busted drain pipe. There are plenty of trades that will never go away.

Unfortunately the unmotivated are pretty much a hopeless cause as long as we continue the generous welfare state. Nothing motivates like missing a few meals because the gravy train disappears.

The low IQ folks are, I hate to say, pretty much doomed. Even the most basic trades require a certain level of skill and understanding. Unless those people have a serious talent, they might be left behind in the future.

Speaking of the future, that busted pipe you speak of will probably be replaced/repaired by nanobots. Might not be for 25 years, but they're a coming......

I'm of the opinion to change within the education structure as a solution....weed 'em out and let the chips fall as req'd....

there will always be those that fail....however (and to your welfare status point), to promote failure (ref: current system) is just downright stupid....

The lower IQ folks tend to have more kids. If 80% have 1.8 kids and the lowest 20% have 3, the lowest only take 3 generations to become the majority. If its 1.5 kids instead of 1.8, it only takes two generations to get to 50/50.

A low IQ person can hammer nails, pour concrete, paint, or lay bricks. That pays a helluva lot more than Burger King.

Agree with the welfare state, but I think it goes well beyond that and into parenting and special snowflake syndrome. They are letting them live at home into their 30s these days.

These kids have no clue about the concepts of responsibility or self actualization. I'd rather my kid make it on his own working at Burger King and living in a run down apartment with no cable or smart phone than living at home and "saving money". Nothing better for motivation, confidence, and self-worth than being able to take care of yourself. When you are 20 years old, it isn't supposed to be comfortable. Where does the drive toward innovation and self-mastery or sense of risk management come from if there is no consequence of failiure? While I can sympathize with some form of a safety net, they need to fall a lot farther before it catches them. Parents todayaren't letting them fall at all and it is doing great harm.

If the premise is that lower IQ people tend to have more kids and those kids would also tend to be lower IQ, then they're saturating the market for those jobs thus driving down wages.

They're in a death spiral of their own making.

That being said, it would also help if people got back to the concept of making sacrifices until they're in a position to afford better things. People used to make do with "basics" and used that as motivation to increase their skills and worth so they eventually have nicer things. Now, many young people just think they're "owed" something and "deserve" better things immediately, no work involved. The days of mac & cheese, ramen noodles, and hot dogs (maybe a Jack's pizza if you were lucky....) for food are over.

We probably haven't seen much impact yet since the middle class having fewer kids is just the last generation and we've gotten rid of lead paint and we've improved nutrition.

RE: Let’s quit brainwashing kids that it’s a college degree or nothing
Its not just telling kids its college or nothing. The courses and requirements in those courses are college prep. That leaves a lot of kids behind. In 9th grade Biology they were studying in detail a lot of things that weren't known in the 70s. Everybody has to take that and Geometry along with 3 other sciences and 3 other maths (although there are lesser alternatives to the Chemistry/Physics and Algebra II/Trig/Calculus paths).

I am friends with a guy who didn't finish his degree, but has been working as an IT/Developer contractor for Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta for 8 years and he makes around $150,000 a year. Pretty damn good if you ask me.

I agree with the premise of this. If I were a state rep in NC, I'd divert some of that lotto money to beefing up Vocat. You can do a lot being a state where plenty of 18 year olds can run a CAD station or program a good Android app.

But, as far as trades are concerned, they are only good options because people aren't going into them. Actually, the trades have always enjoyed a middle ground between unskilled and professional careers. They've always managed their numbers to not let too many in.

If there were plenty of people availlable the jobs will be spread out, work will be cheaper, and the pay will go down and tradesmen know that.

I've seen low voltage cabling go from a company being able to pay their techs $21/hr to $13/hr because of this.

got her fired too.....
