With the ouster of Knight, Indiana never recovered. Everybody loved to hate Bobby, but he was one helluva basketball coach.
Coach Knight was arguably the best coach ever. All the other coaches who have won 3 or more titles had WAY more talent than he ever had.
Just look at 1984, when his Indiana team with nobody beat Dean Smith's UNC team with Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.
His 1981 champs had clearly less talent than the UNC team it beat, as did his 1987 team that beat Syracuse for the title.
Nobody did more with less than Knight.
Man I still get sick every time I'm remined of that game. SU had that game in the bag with just a few seconds left with SU up maybe 7 points. Boehiem started playing stall ball and would not foul the 3 point shooter. The rest is history.
I have three of those "sicknesses" that will always haunt me, in no particular order:
1) Georgetown losing to Villanova
2) Rams losing SB to Patriots (I've been a Rams fan since 1973)
3) Orioles losing 79 WS to Pirates (Orioles fan since 1974)
All three still regularly blow up my brain, LOL.
Brooks Robinson was the man! The great Orioles included the aces of Cuellar, McNally, Plamer and Dobson, and had that other Robinson as well, Frank. The '79 Orioles weren't quite that dominant on the mound.
73 was around when i first followed baseball. My older brother was a huge O's fan.
73 Orioles vs A's... Game 4 at Oakland, Balt down 2-1 in games, and 4-1 in the 7th... Andy Etchebarren hit an unlikely go-ahead 3-run HR to force a Game 5. Catfish shutout Baltimore for the Series.
73 Mets has amazing pitching... Seaver, Matlack, Koosman... the just-passed Rusty Staub was fantastic vs Cincinnati (who didn't have Gary Nolan that year), but Staub slammed into the wall at Shea and couldn't throw. Game 3, Rose picked a fight with Bud Harrrelson in a Mets blowout win. Game 4, after Rose was being pelted with batteries in LF, Sparky took team off the field... Mays, Seaver and Yogi went out to LF to plead with fans to stop. Rose 12th inning HR forced Game 5.
Watching as a kid i just remember an insane NY crowd, hot dog wrappers flying around, jets overhead with deafening noise drowning out announcers... very very exviting and memorable to an impressionable young fan like me.
Crazy World Series, Felix Millan error in Game 1, Mike Andrews errors in Game 2, Finley acting like a nut... Campaneris and Jackson HR to win Game 7.
74 Orioles were 7 GB late August but went 34-5 to close out season and overtake Sox and Yanks. Versus A's, bounced in Game 4 though Oak got only 1 hit late, a Reggie RBI double... Cuellar had walked a ton early to give A's 1-0 lead... O's challenged in 9th... final out was Baylor striking out while NBC cameras were showing replay or something.
79 Orioles... had huge Game 4 rally late, crazy inning where Pittsburgh intentionally walked .184 hitting Billy Smith before former NC State hoops champion and now pitcher Tim Stoddard hit a single. No offense back in Games 6 and 7, only getti g 1crun on a Rich Dauer HR... Weaver in 9th seemed to have made 7 pitching changes.
...ok i'm outta breath...
GREAT ERA FOR BASEBALL!!!
