RE: Football Spring Open Practice Details - Time changed to 730am
Sorry, haven't had a chance to update. I went to the practice on Saturday morning, perfect football weather, albeit a bit humid.

There were probably about 150 people in attendance. There were a lot of people sitting in the East concourse, near the top. Talked to Mike Bohn as I walked in, great guy, he has high expectations for this season (I know he has to say that).

Ridder was in fact on crutches, but ended up standing without crutches and calling in plays during the "scrimmage" portion. He's in a knee brace for a few more days.

The DBs were attacking the ball hard, swatting, tipping, going for picks. Mike Mickens had the loudest voice on the field of the coaches.

First team OL looked rough against the first team DL in some pass protection drills (they weren't running plays, just protections).

Hayden and Bryant were basically splitting reps. Sopko looked AWFUL when he got a chance. Bryant has a hell of an arm.

They didn't do much work with RBs that I saw. Clear that they needed work in the passing game.

Cole Smith looked good kicking the ball on FGs, didn't look great on kickoffs. Ryan Jones got work kicking and punting.

It started raining at my place (close to campus) around 11:30, came down pretty good for a while, thunder and lightning as well. They made the right move. They couldn't move it to later due to an alumni golf outing, which is what Bohn told me.

Thanks for that report!

I agree about this being the right move. For all the moaning, and groaning, the spring game isn't about the fans. It's a practice. Why even bother risk losing the practice just for the sake of a few more in attendance. More power to programs that can afford that, but coming off of back to back 4-8 seasons I think this is the right call.

God bless, Sopko. I can't knock his hustle. He's obviously fine being an emergency QB. He's playing his part though. Him being there allows us to likely RS Bryant which will be a HUGE help to our program down the road.

That is huge, especially if Ridder can pick up and go with the 1's next season. Having two years of eligibility between them will help immensely in ensuring we've got a steady stable of QBs over the next 4-5 years.

That being said. If Ben Bryant is the best QB in the summer, he should start this year, IMO. I don't think that's the case, but the best players should start. Regardless of what year they are.
