Is this what you're asking for?

If you count the number of D2, D3 and NAIA schools and some defunct schools and a scattering of 2 year schools at that time? There were like 1000 + schools that would have fit under d1 back then since there was really no divisions back then except for the NAIA that started in 1937.

Yes I understand that. University Division didn't start until 1955 and DI didn't start until 1973. This is just "NCAA" schools listed by sports-reference.com which only lists "major" schools (D1 or equivalent). I'm not sure how they determine if a school is "major". My suggestion would be just to take a look for yourself.

They do not have Case and Western Reserves listed which they were an independent schools back then not affiliated with a conference. Those types of schools were considered major back then. But, if you look at the basketball? They listed non-NCAA schools like Baker, Southwestern Kansas, Texas Wesleyan, OKCU and USCAA's Central Penn. College. East Central Oklahoma, Emporia State and Central Missouri listed as D1 schools.

Yeah idk man. If you know of a better source to get sports data I'd be happy to use it. Honestly it seems hard to track down who was who back then.

I had a hard time compiling the correct number of original members of the IAAUS, some sources said 38 or 39, others anywhere from 64 to 68 I think? Let alone identify who they were. Unfortunately I couldn't even find a copy of the IAAUS constitution, so there's no primary sources to look to (that I'm aware of). There seems to be a lot of contradictory information prior to the 1950s. I really find college sports history very interesting, but it's hard to get the facts straight it seems. On a related note, I have a spreadsheet of who I think might be in the original IAAUS. You seem like a knowledgeable guy on this subject, mind helping me dig through it?

Anything before 1973 has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. It wasn't unusual for a College Division I school that these sites will deem modern Division II to award as many or more rides as a University Division school that would tabbed Division I now.

The primary difference between College Division I and University Division in football was the schedule played and which set of bowls you would be considered for at the end of the year.
