Distance Education is far from a new concept. Get over it.

Hell, it there wasn't the Sandusky issues, Penn State, who started their Global Campus brand of distance education in 1998, would be the leader in the USA.

Many of the TV weather personalities you see get a distance learning certificate or degree from ASU, Mississippi State, or Penn State.

Cannot wait for the thread on UCF and their community college connection which basically guarantees those who obtain an AA, admission to UCF, called DirectConnect

A huge portion of which was funded by thier online venture.

Liberty has made all the right moves though. They made a huge fortune off of online courses. And I don't want to disparage online study. It's a great avenue for people without the time for traditional college courses. But it is nonselective.

Liberty has heavily reinvested that money back into their campus and are able to offer tuition as a private institution that rivals the state schools. Thier on campus enrollment has skyrocketed and the student life there is good. They'll continue to grow in those regards. Sports is one aspect of that and they've been very aggressive in investing there too.

Speaking of sports have you seen pics of how our phase 1 stadium upgrades are going? No erector set stands for us. It’s really changing the look and feel of Williams Stadium.

About a month old video. The seating area is basically done now.

Found some pics that were taken last week of the progress. Just look in the pic section in the link.

I drove by there on 460 not long ago and could see construction happening but didn't investigate and haven't followed the project but I'm looking forward to visiting this fall.

Arizona St started ice hockey and will build a fancy arena. More sport offering are promised there. A sign of a very financially healthy university.

Liberty has expanded its ice arena and sponsors five club hockey teams at each level. Varsity ice hockey is coming.

But look at Arizona State.

Their online advertising is everywhere.
They increased their enrollment to 100,000 with about 30,000 exclusively from online.
They have a goal of 125,000 enrollment in several years, with the increase coming mostly online.
Their reliance on state funding has dropped from 65% of the total to just 9% as they have increased their online %.
Arizona State is becoming wealthy due to their online presence.

Is Arizona State not knocked on the board and others because they are PAC12?

Liberty started as a non-profit, private institution with online learning.

ASU is a non-profit, public institution with online learning.

Grand Canyon was a non-profit tiny church school which was on the verge of bankruptcy and closing their doors. They became a for profit, publicly traded online university with a small campus presence which is also for profit. They have had lawsuits filed against them, calling them out as being nothing more then a diploma mill. Some former employees have publicly stated that the school is no different then the U of Phoenix and all the other scam for profit institutions. Can they change? Maybe, but their history will always follow them.

Liberty gets crap because of Jerry Falwell but they are, and always have been a real University. Grand Canyon is more like the University of Phoenix then Liberty.

Almost every major university now offer online learning. One of the biggest in my area is Colorado State who offer an excellent online Masters program. They are all non-profit. People have an issue with Grand Canyon's for profit status. And the game their CEO is now playing of attempting to have it both ways.

Last I heard GCU is trying to become a non-profit. But not in the way a real non-profit is. More like the core part of the university is non-profit but every other aspect of the school is contracted out as a for-profit. So they can say they are non-profit but still run it like a for-profit.

Here in San Diego, a billboard went up a few weeks ago advertising University of Texas at San Antonio's online programs. Or maybe it was North Texas (I forget). One of the smaller FBS Texas schools.

I don't think it actually competes with the traditional campus setting too much. It just lets universities access a previously untapped market.

Correction: Liberty started as a non-profit, private institution. Online learning was added approximately 30 years later.

Sorry, that's actually what I meant, just worded it wrong. Same with ASU. Public adding online learning. To compare either to GCU just doesn't compute.

It seems like the state of Arizona was the first to realize how outdated the traditional college system is.

It depends. If these programs don't have admissions standards, then they're worthless.

If they require GRE/GMAT/SAT scores and competitive GPA's then they're okay.

It’s acually a little more complex than that. The accreditation agency that covers that area of the US is pretty relaxed in their requirements. That’s why lots of for-profits are from that area. For example LU has SACS accreditation which is a pretty strict agency when it comes to what it will allow for online. Basically you have to be a real brick and mortar school that has an online program. Obviously ASU doesn’t fall in that category it just happens to exist in the same region.

Here is a list of all the main for-profits accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

University of Phoenix
Kaplan University
American InterContinental University
Colorado Technical University
American Public University
American Military University
DeVry University
Grand Canyon University
Capella University
National American University

Notice a trend? All the big for-profit players are HLC schools. That’s not an accident.

New pic of some of the stadium upgrade process. I would post this stuff in the forum but I don’t know how.

It is interesting to see how Kaplan U became Purdue University Global. It seems like there were two main thoughts from Purdue alum. One, that it was innovated but needs work. Two, they were concerned that this move would lower the perception of a degree from Purdue. The online degrees water down the Purdue brand.
