There was a twitter post recently from one of the realignment guys claiming Amazon was interested in acquiring FOX. A third bidder would make things very interesting.

As big as Comcast and Disney are, they are dwarfed by internet jackpot winners like Amazon and Google, and even Netflix now matches their market cap.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if 5-10 years from now the media giants are Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and Google. Maybe Microsoft as well, with the traditional firms like FOX, Disney, Universal, and Warner's all absorbed in some way by them.

Heh - I wouldn't trust a Twitter realignment guy on correctly reporting which socks he's wearing today much less one possibly the largest media M&A deal in history.

That being said, Amazon (or any of the other FANG companies of Facebook, Netflix or Google) bidding for Fox is very intriguing on paper. If the Murdoch family wants a stock deal instead of a cash deal for tax reasons, then getting a huge chunk of FANG stock is probably even better than Disney stock. Amazon is the company that's openly looking to be a conglomerate beyond tech compared to the other FANG companies, so it wouldn't shock me at all if they were interested in buying Fox. (I just don't buy that a realignment guy has any inside info at all on this matter.)

Of course, I was watching Ocean's 11 the other day (such a great rewatchable movie) and the Warner Bros. logo before the opening credits had a blast from the past where it proclaimed that it was an "AOL Time Warner Company". Now, I don't think that any of the FANG companies will necessarily suffer the same fate as AOL, but we should all remember that AOL was worth over $200 billion in 2000 where it looked unstoppable and could literally gobble up all but a handful of companies in the world at that time... and by 2005, AOL was looked at the equivalent of a huge horse-and-carriage company that ran into the Model T. Heck, up until very recently, ESPN was making more profits for Disney than the entire rest of their company COMBINED, yet now ESPN is being blamed for dragging down Disney's stock. Fortunes can change extremely quickly in this paradigm, especially with how quickly technology advances today.

Even though the Financial media refers to Amazon as one of the FANG tech stocks.....Amazon is actually not a Tech company.

Hulu is a combined efforts of the major networks.
Lionsgate is a backer of Tubi TV. You get to watch free movies with commercials which means major titles from Lionsgate studios. They had The Hurt Locker on their. They even have some sports shows and docs on there.
Wal-Mart owns VuDU.
Crackle is own by Sony who owns The Game Show Network.
So, some studios are already on the band wagon.

Disney used to own a streaming site that went down.

The rumor is Amazon is looking at big FOX and FS1, FS2 etc. Not the regional networks and the movie studios.

Bingo! Thank you. One misstated quote of an internet rumor turned into a couple of pages of hooey souffle.

Disney is acquiring the RSN's and movie production studios. One of the targets of Disney with regard to the studios was the rights to the first Star Wars which gives them the rights to all of the Star Wars movies as well as rights to other kids movies they were interested in owning. I believe Frank covered this a few months back.

I could readily understand why Comcast would be interested in FOX Sports, FS1 and FS2. Disney didn't go after those and in part in hopes of sidestepping antitrust issues.

BTW: Serving Hooey Souffle is not a crime around here. But, sometimes I think it is this board's Blue Plate Special!

Comcast already owns NBC, NBCSN, MSNBC, CNBC, and a string of regional sports networks. Acquiring the Fox properties not in the Disney-Fox deal should be just as iffy for them as it would be for Disney/ESPN/ABC.

Actually, the twitter rumor wasnt really misquoted. However, I did link it to the Disney bid. I was thinking the tweet said Amazon was interested in taking everything. This is the tweet by the way---its not detailed enough to determine exactly what they are supposedly looking at purchasing (assuming its even true). Hell, the FOX Sports mention could even be pure speculation by the writer depending on how you take it. Wasnt looking to derail the thread---just thought the tweet might be of interest.

The tweet is from Greg Flugaur's twitter feed

Big Ten Man or BTM is a creation of Greg Fluguar much the same way the Dude of West Virginia once had an alleged inside source to Oliver Luck. If a beat writer tweets information from Bloomberg or CNBC that's a different matter.

Fluguar and Lambert (The Dude) tweet back and forth just to stir their audience base and drive twitter traffic and blog traffic to enhance their ad dollars. When absolutely nothing is happening these guys have to drive traffic.

I have a reason to strongly believe that they have taken a number of message board names on various sites in order to perpetuate the rumors they create by attributing threads to the posts of those two ingrates.

It's wholly specious IMO to base anything upon what either of them says. We have more earnest and competent bloggers who post here and among them are Frank the Tank and Hokie Mark. The sooner that Fluguar, Bluevod, The Dude, Mhver3, TuxedoYoda, and I'm sure I've forgotten some, are booted from message boards everywhere the sooner we'll get back to having conversations about information from accountable sources.

I promise you that if the Big 10 had an inside guy leaking information that Delany would have already ferreted him/her out and replaced them. And that's true of every conference commissioner where so much legal entanglement becomes possible with even the slightest leak of what goes on in confidence within their offices.

It's no wonder that the tweet you cited was non specific or vague. They all are to avoid being legally tagged.

That is why I called it a Hooey Souffle. Pages of conjecture arising from a lot of hot hooey.

I didn't bother to look up Comcast's holdings because I could tell by the claims being made it wasn't the Disney deal. And when it turns out to be tweet attributed to the cryptic creation of Fluguar that cinched it.

I could see Comcast want to go after Fox. Comcast also owns the USA Network and the SyFy Channel, SyFy used to show reruns of the X-Files which is a Fox tv show, Fox does have some hits like The Last Man On Earth and Orville which both be considered Sci Fi shows. They would also be interested in grabbing The Strain and American Horror Story as well. SyFy channel have bombed in original shows lately. They also starting showing Futurerama which was a FOX show as well.

Also remember that, for all the fun people make of them, the AOL team traded half of their inflated stock for the entire Time Warner empire. Somehow it was the AOL guys who ended up losing their jobs, not the guys who sold their company for magic beans.

Interesting commentary article on what Disney should do to have its stock soar by Eric Jackson over on CNBC last Friday.

Disney as a Service

Business analysis is not my strength, but I found it interesting in light of the possible monkey wrench in its current plans as a result of Comcast trying to get FOX assets over Disney.

Not sure how much the FOX assets helps Disney in this analysis or if it presents a case of Disney not even needing the FOX assets to improve its stocks.

Cheers,
Neil

Selling a monthly subscription service is the biggest reason why Disney wants the Fox movie/TV assets.

Disney is going to start a competitor to Netflix, which has the potential to draw people away from Netflix if consumers think the combined Disney/Fox content library is more attractive than what Netflix has.

IMO, over time, Disney will also migrate more sports assets over to ESPN+, and they'll be able to offer consumers a discount on a "bundle" that gives them access to both "Disneyflix" and ESPN+.

Disney will end up with 60% of Hulu while Comcast has 30 and AT&T 10. So after Disney puts their premium Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars on a Disney branded subscription. I image they'd steer the rest toward Hulu.

I hope Comcast gets it. No speculation on my part. I don't know if it'll be good or bad for ESPN.--based on the responses here I've gathered that it'll somehow be bad for ESPN and that's why the responses are being made the way they are. Am I wrong and this has nothing to do with ESPN in any way?
