North Carolina State
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Virginia

Tier 3
Boston College
Wake Forest

Of course this just my opinion. 07-coffee3

Two problems.

Notre Dame isn't part of ACC football except for stealing bowl bids away from conference teams.

There's absolutely no way Louisville is higher in the pecking order than Miami & Virginia Tech.

I believe Wilkie came up with his three tiers and then presented each grouping in alphabetical order.

There is still nothing in the data supports Louisville being Tier 1 other than being an opponent of a real Tier 1 program. Miami and VT are in there at least once of their own accord. The only times Louisville is mentioned is with one of the other four.

The next question is.....how many Friday night games are on said list?

The only supposed reason behind playing Friday night games was exposure......does the data support the supposed reasoning?

I understand both viewpoints. For myself I see Louisville as betwixt and between Wilkie's list of Tier 1 and Tier 2. Perhaps not truly at ACC Tier 1 level but they are far, far closer to that than they are the other Tier 2 programs. But this view is more based upon the programs themselves, not the list of Top 40 ACC contract/neutral site games over the past 4 years.

Since you brought up the list, I assume your mention of VT being on the Top 40 list at least once against a program not at Wilkie's ACC Tier 1 level that you are referring to VT-WVU since B1G/SEC Tier 1 programs Ohio State/Tennessee are the other VT games on the list to make the Top 40, not involving Clemson.

But if VT is Tier 1 in the ACC (which I agree with), wouldn't WVU be considered Tier 1 if they were in the ACC as well? I see them as comparable programs. So, in essence, I don't think the list truly helps in regard to distinguishing between VT and Louisville in terms of generating viewers for games.

Again my own thoughts on this is that Louisville is just outside Tier 1 in their own Tier 2 category knocking on the door to Tier 1 if they continue to perform well over the next decade.

Cheers,
Neil

When I do the individual analysis program by program, I might look into this aspect. My gut instinct is that since these Friday night games are usually hosted by BC, Duke, SU, UVA, or UL, I bet that the overall average number of viewers will be higher for these games than normal since they are on ESPN2 and usually play against one of the top 5 ACC programs - games that might get placed on ESPNU if played on a Saturday, or put in a miserable time slot if on ESPN2.

Example, last year the UL/SU game was on Friday night and drew 1.730 million viewers. This year it was on Saturday on ESPNU and only drew 223K viewers. Another example, Miami/Duke was on Friday night this year and drew 1.709 million viewers, but the two previous years (once on ESPN2 the other on ESPNU) when played on Saturday it only drew 505K and 490K. Now it obviously didn't hurt that Miami was undefeated this season, but that match-up was week 5, end of September, with Miami only 2-0, but ranked #14 going into that week.

Again this is only a hunch based on an extremely small data set and other examples may make me rethink this. As I have said quite a few times in the past I have been known to be wrong before and will likely be wrong again in the future. This could be one of those cases.

Cheers,
Neil
