The CFP isn't the NIT of anything. There is no other Div 1A Playoff.
The problem is UCF should have been in it. Since they weren't, they weren't given the opportunity to win the National Title on the field. When UCF beat Auburn, they finished as the ONLY undefeated team in college football. They were ranked #1 in one of the final polls.
Alabama won the CFP but they didn't win their conference. They didn't even win their division. So while The NCAA will recognize Alabama as the 2017 Champ, UCF does have a claim. They got the rings, put the 2017 National Champs on their stadium and are rolling with it.
Alot of people agree with them. If the CFP Committee had just done right by the G5 conferences and given a team from the G5 the chance to compete this wouldn't be an issue. The way I look at it, is that sure UCF is fighting for their own claim and doing what they need to do to propel their program forward, but this is also fighting for the non "power" schools and maybe opening the door for future G5 teams in the future. Especially if the playoff expands. That's why I said if Utah, Boise State, TCu and others had done the same when they won and went undefeated the landscape today might be different.
I've even seen a couple Auburn fans come on here and say that UCF is their National Champion. Maybe it's because they hate Bama and don't care, but what UCF is doing is a good start for all of us.
