Matt Deggs out of Sam Houston would be a great hire

Deggs, Matt Riser from SLU or a TCU assistant are the names I’ve seen thrown around.

Also some people want Lance Berkman to come back and coach but his only experience to date is a couple years of HS coaching.

That or Jared Moon at Houston Baptist.

The real question is who is realistic for Rice and who do the fans want.

I don't know if you guys can get him, but Kirk Saarloos would do big things at Rice.

you have to pay homage to that guy.....what a lengthy run of success he brought to Rice baseball.....

he's one of those rare one's you're happy to have witnessed as a fan....

Quote:Graham took over at Rice in 1992. He inherited a program that had tallied only seven winning seasons in 78 years of Southwest Conference play, and had only finished above fourth place once.

his overall record ---> conference(s) record through '17

1,145-495 --> 520–229

that's nothing shy of impressive....

I would offer up a body appendage of my choice (or the first born of an Alabama fan) for a coach with that kind of W-L success and longevity.

A shame he goes out with a whimper, almost better if he retired a few seasons ago...

It kills me to see it end this way for Wayne Graham. He's an amazing guy. I hope he's treated well as he leaves.

he's an icon.....the 'exit stage left' is never easy.....

as I opined in post #8, I choose to view what he has meant to Rice's baseball program.....again, it's nothing shy of amazing....

what a helluva run......it is truly iconic....

WOW.... he's been there almost literally forever. Its going to be tough to be the guy after him. Hopefully Rice can keep the tradition up.

RE: Coach Graham not coming back to Rice baseball next year
What many people don't realize-- even Rice folks-- is that if not for Wayne Graham and our 2003 national championship, Rice would have not stayed in D-1 athletics. (This from the McKinsey Report, who were partially tasked with evaluating if we could exit D-1 in all sports except baseball.) Also, from what I've heard from several sources, a big, if not THE reason for our 2004 invite to join CUSA (beginning in 2005) was because of the attraction of our baseball program joining what was then a very, very strong baseball conference (with Tulane in the midst of it's 3- 5 year run as a Top 10 team, UH still a perennial Top 25 team, USM and ECU, and with the desire to replace the then departing TCU).

A baseball legend honestly. His contributions cannot be understated with regards to Rice on the national stage of college baseball. 23 straight postseasons, a host of CUSA championships, and a national championship.

Walt-----what are your personal thoughts on this situation?
