Dooley hires former UCONN Associate HC (Raphael Chillious)
Huskies? Thoughts?

Most ECU folks think this is a big time hire for Dooley.

Given his history as a recruiter I’m surprised Hurley didn’t keep him on staff.

I didn't really get a chance to get a good sense of him but from a resume perspective, seems like a good get for ECU.

RE: Dooley hires former UCONN Associate HC (Raphael Chillious)
I think this is a slam dunk. He was the top assistant at Washington and lead recruiter on Markel Fultz just a couple years ago getting him to move from Maryland to Washington. That's pretty impress to get a top 5 recruit to move all the way across the country for a program that isn't a blue blood IMO. He was also at Villanova for a couple years, Nike, and the head coach at South Kent Prep where he coached a lot of NBA players there. Other than Dooley he's probably already the most accomplished recruiter we've had. Together they should be a good tandem on getting us good players.

Exactly the kind of guy ECU needs. Also helps to have someone familiar with the current conference.

Really think this is a great hire. I'm so glad to see us finally invest in basketball. Let's keep it up Dooley.

Good point. He probably has some game scouts of a lot of the same players he will face and will have familiarity with opposing players/coaching styles and even knows where to stay, where the arenas is etc is helpful the first time I would think and take away some of those issues.

Great attitude and quote:
"Recruiting is like hunting," Chillious told the Hartford Courant in 2017. "You chase more than you kill, but when you kill you want to make sure it's a nice, great, juicy meal."

Washington put out a lot of one and done and NBA talent in his time there...

2009 Jon Brockman
2009 Justin Dentmon
2010 Quincy Pondexter
2011 Isaiah Thomas
2011 Justin Holiday2013)
2012 Terrence Ross
2012 Tony Wroten
2014 C.J. Wilcox
2016 Marquese Chriss
2016 Dejounte Murray
2017 Markelle Fultz

As head coach of South Kent for 5 years he coached

Isaiah Thomas, Dorrell Wright, Andray Blatche and Dion Waiters. Apparently brought IT to Washington with him.

Playing devil's advocate for a second here...

He has definitely brought a lot of great players to UCONN, Villanova, & Washington. But bringing them to our beloved ECU will be a monumental challenge, compared to the other 3.

I don't think anyone's expecting him to bring in 5 star blue chippers here but it is certainly an upgrade in recruiting to what we've had in the past. If we can start getting the Gary Clark's to come here as opposed to going out of state then I think we will be very successful.

Chill only spent a year at UCONN. 2018's Emmitt Matthews Jr would have been his first good recruit. Nova was also a one year stint. All those great recruits you speak of played at Washington.

I don't expect them to bring that level of talent to ECU. It's all relative. I think he was helping to get a level of talent to Washington that's probably more than they should given their recruiting area, tradition etc. NC is a strong recruiting area and I expect we will get most of the recruits we want over ODU, Charlotte, UNCW, Richmond, Mason, Winthrop etc in the area if they are doing a good job and will compete favorable with schools like VCU, George Washington and the traditionally lower level ACC and P5 schools like Virginia Tech, Clemson, Georgia etc. I doubt a school like Boston College will be able to get recruits from our area as easy for example. We just need to hold our own on those type of recruits to build a respectable program.

I don't put anything past them though recruiting a few higher level players. Dooley got the #2 rated player from NC on 247 who was a top 130 player in the nation to commit to go to the ASUN. He was rated higher than Luke Maye who went to UNC at the time and had really high level transfers.

Correct and I would think Washington is the least attractive basketball school of the 3 by a lot too. Pulling the level of talent they did there is pretty good work in that context. I hope he can bring Matthews Jr with him.
