And yet that might be part of their problem. After running the gauntlet of P5 games at the beginning of the season and getting beat up, the morale is down at the end of the season if BYU is not bowl eligible and they are playing teams that are viewed as junk teams by BYU fans, that can't get in a conference, for nothing as has been noted in previous writings. No shot at a bowl, no shot at a conference championship, and no fan interest at that point in a mediocre season.
Alternative explanation: BYU's team just wasn't very good last year.

Kind of my point. Now if 4-5 wins and dwindling attendance becomes the norm then these threads would make more sense. But results have mostly been good, fans are happy, and attendance is solid. What's not to like especially when the alternative is the MWC and a less interesting schedule.

Well this year and the next 2 years will test that theory out. The have 4-5 P5 schools (good caliber ones) and the rest of the G5 type schools.
They try to setup themselves up to be bowl eligible by having 6 - 7 G5 teams on the schedule. Unfortunately, those G5 team are pretty good and still will beat BYU....especially when they lose 4 or 5 games at the start we'll see how the morale is for them.

BYU independence really puts the Cougars in a good spot:
If independence continues to work they are right where they want it to be
If they ever fall on hard times they can easily get back into the MWC
If a media partner makes the AAC an awesome offer contingent on adding two/four top notch western teams, essentially creating a stranglehold on the G5 NY6 slot BYU can easily jump aboard.
