The only way would be to form a new conference, thus able to clear out dead weight. Limit it to 12 so money is worthwhile.

West
Boise
BYU
CSU
SDSU
UH
SMU.

East - you hardcore east fans know it better than I, but think Marshall, So Miss and Troy might be considered in addition to the best AAC schools. My best guess for East:

UCF
USF
SO Miss
Memphis
Cincy
UConn

This is for all sports, thus the inclusion of UConn.

You know... forming a "new" conference every 5 years probably isn't the best long term strategy.

Probably not. But assuming the Big 12 collapses or experiences a mass exodus of teams at the end of the current contract, then this would be the opportunity to create that "new conference". Using the Big 12 leftovers you would have solid core of centralize schools and you could just east and west wings to them.

Baylor
Houston
SMU
Tulane
CSU
BYU
Boise State
SDSU

ISU
Cincy
Memphis
UCONN
Navy
ECU
USF
UCF

Not pretty but it shapes up as a more sensible "best of the rest" conference than just slapping a few MWC schools to the AAC or vice versa.

If the big12 collapsed to the point that Baylor and ISU are the only teams left , I would think that the AAC would simply absorb them rather than let those two leftover teams rip the whole conference apart to create some east/West unsustainable bohemeth 07-coffee307-coffee307-coffee3

In a B-12 collapse you would have more than Baylor and ISU left. The collapse would be brought on with Texas, TT, Oklahoma, and OK State leaving for the PAC-12. That would leave Kansas, K-ST, ISU, WV, Baylor, and TCU. That set of schools would probably grab BYU and 5 AAC schools and remain under the B-12 banner. That isn't happening though as Texas and Oklahoma will work their differences as long as the P5 money keeps rolling in and will remain at 10 or expand back to 12 if the TV money can justify that move again. By remaining together and keeping the B-12 Conference intact both Oklahoma and Texas have a better chance of reaching and playing for the National Championship. All they need to do so is to keep comparable P5 income coming in that matches the other power leaders of the other P5 Conferences. 07-coffee3

BYU did not back out. They never accepted the offer whereas Boise accepted the FB only offer and had to pay a penalty fee of $5 million dollars to BACK OUT OF THE AAC CONFERENCE. 04-cheers

Okay but they still 'had their chance'. They were offered membership, they said no.

RE: Coast to Coast AAC revisited
What might be worth considering for the AAC is picking up Air Force and Colorado St. Thats a pair of Mountain time zone teams that would allow the AAC to offer a few late slot TV start times, pick up viewers in a relatively populated growing state, and to add another academy to the roster. The travel wouldnt be too bad as the western division would comprise 5 mostly contiguous states (Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado--Tennessee is the only state not sharing a border). Navy would move to the east and have a protected crossover with Navy. The other option would be for Navy to stay west and Memphis to move to the east.

The AAC is already coast to coast with two affiliation members in California.
