Isn't this more of a chicken and egg type thing? Did media adapt to its audience or did media shape its audience?

For me, I see it much more as the latter. Corporations who own media have particular messages they want to emphasize and others they want to de-emphasize or outright ignore for varying reasons. Using the political networks as an example, the nearest "liberal/globalist" equivalent to "ultra conservative/nationalist" FOX News is actually The Young Turks on YouTube, not the more centrist/left-leaning CNN or MSNBC. Smart audience members sample all of them as well as newspapers to try and discern the truth as nearly as such truths can be discerned.

The only time I see media even pretend to adapt to the audience is when enough of the audience is so offended by the content of a show or an individual on a show that they threaten boycotts of advertisers products to express that outrage. Within days or weeks it is business as usual once a sacrificial lamb (or sometimes a simple apology and promise to do better) has been offered up to allow the outrage to subside.

End of mini-rant.

Cheers,
Neil

If you really want to discern the news from what is reported then you will want to listen to NHK out of Tokyo (the Anglicized version), Deutsche Welt, and a few others in addition to the agenda oriented local news channels.

One of my favorites is NHK. They tend to present both sides of an issue without commenting on which they think is correct when dealing with geopolitical matters and simply report events as they unfold for breaking news items. And between news times you get something cultural from Japan. It's like getting 1950's and early 60's US News mixed in with National Geographic.

Then contrast that to the European slant as taken from the Germans and the BBC (not BBC America). For matters in the Middle East it's harder. Al Jazeera and Israeli news services are harder to find now.

Have family in Norway/Sweden. They don't get the news....they get information the government has OK'd to release. The people have ZERO idea. Seriously.

Well, I guess if I was in the sauna after a day's work with my Nordic blonde honey I wouldn't really care about the news either. On the other hand if you are an American family where it takes two paychecks to keep up and you both come home tired, don't have a sauna, and have to eat take out food that is bad for you then a heavy dose of how crappy the world really is probably is supposed to make you feel better about your hard scrabble existence, at least when compared to the European work weak.
