Siena drops field hockey
Siena drops field hockey. Apparently, most field hockey games on a Astro turf, which Siena doesn’t have, so most of their games are on the road.
Women’s lacrosse is growing around the country, while field hockey is stagnant in participation. Siena already has both genders of lax and still has 21 sports. The MAAC will retain six field hockey schools.

Missouri St has also dropped field hockey.

RE: Siena drops field hockey
Siena has FieldTurf instead of AstroTurf, that's interesting that field hockey has a preference for the harder stuff. This sort of thing is always sad for those close to the program, but focusing on being better at fewer things is a good strategy. The MAAC only has three full members that sponsor field hockey now and the conference is rounded out by three affiliates from the NEC.

RE: Siena drops field hockey
Always sad.
The team went 1-16 this year. I scrolled through the past several seasons. Had several 1-win and even 0-win seasons.
According to the press release: "the Siena Field Hockey program completed its 40th varsity season last fall including its 25th at the NCAA Division I level. Siena compiled a final overall record of 134-419-9 (.246), including a 50-325 (.133) mark in DI competition." Over 25 years their average season record was 2-14. The AD said, “We have put the student athletes at a competitive disadvantage which cannot be easily solved.”
Their final match this year was their only victory: 4-3 in 3 overtimes to Bryant Univ. Maybe that memory will help to take the sting out.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we lose a conference before too long - America East has a division of California schools, and the MAAC and NEC are effectively running a joint league.

I don't think there's a HS that I know of that has field hockey. Not surprising there's a lack of interest at the collegiate level.

Almost every high school in the Philly suburbs has Field Hockey so it’s at least somewhat popular in that region.

Field hockey has a good tradition in Virginia, particularly in Hampton Roads where ODU has nine national titles, the high schools often rank among the nation's best and there's a US Field Hockey regional training center in Virginia Beach. But that said, field hockey doesn't seem like much of a growth sector.

RE: Siena drops field hockey
The Univ of Iowa has a field hockey team (9 of the 14 schools in the Big Ten do). Iowa and St. Louis Univ might be the only programs (barely) west of the Mississippi. They might be the only schools west of Indiana that have teams.
I wondered where they get their players because I can't think of any high schools in the Des Moines/Omaha area that play. I can't think of any youth field hockey leagues in this area.
6 players are from VA, 3 from St. Louis area, 1 from CA, 2 from PA, 1 from NJ, 4 from England, 1 from New Zealand, 1 from Tasmania (!)
The head coach is from PA as is one assistant. The other assistant is a male from England.
They have to cover a lot of ground to get players.

There's four California programs (Cal, Stanford, UC Davis, Pacific). They, naturally, play in America East. But otherwise, yeah, there's very few programs west of the Mississippi.

RE: Siena drops field hockey
Field hockey seems to be an increasingly regional sport and I think that's why it's declining at the collegiate level. There just isn't a good supply of local talent to fill rosters. Look at all of those international kids listed in prior posts.
Beach Volleyball is the way to go. Plenty of HS girls already have the skill set to be on collegiate teams. I also think women's 3-on-3 basketball could be a future title IX sport.

D2 has actually grown over the last 4 years with 6 new programs. All are along the eastern seaboard from New England to South Carolina except for 3 teams. Those three are: Alderson Broaddus (WV), Bellarmine (KY), and Lindenwood (MO).
Here in Colorado about 20 high schools have a varsity team and a championship is sponsored by CHSAA. There is also a field hockey club for girls and boys 5 miles from my home.

RE: Siena drops field hockey
Here's a fun field hockey fact:
The US men's field hockey team won their only medal, a bronze, in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles when they finished 3rd out of 3 teams. The women's team won their only medal, a bronze, in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles finishing 3rd out of 6 teams. (Hmm... I hope Los Angeles gets the Olympics in 2028.)
US Women are currently ranked 7th in the world, men are 26th.
So, is title IX killing men's field hockey and causing us to lose Olympic medals?
Now I will probably go another decade and not think about field hockey.

RE: Siena drops field hockey
Title IX is killing American Track and Field on the men's side, as well as sports like Volleyball. Women are winning more and more medals, men fewer and fewer, as NCAA scholarships tilt Football and women's sports due to Title IX. Also having an impact is the skew of women to men getting as high as 3:2 (we are approaching an era where 1/3rd of the potential males are missing from college, and nobody is saying anything ... that has to have major economic and social impact).
