US Open Qualifying
In today's first qualifying round for the US Open, Michael Whitehead shot a 67 and is tied for first place. Mario Carmona shot a 68 and is alone in 3rd Place and Michael Buttacavoli shot a 68 and is in a four-way tie for 4th.

It looks like the top 8 plus ties will qualify for the Sectional Round. There are still about 30 golfers who have not finished (including a couple of former PGA Tour players and Kevin Reilly) from Rice but we should have at least two make it to the Sectional Round.

Mitchell Meissner is in San Antonio (or Kerrville) trying to qualify too. Plus there's a Jonathan Meissner in that field as well - I wonder if they are related?

Here's the link to the USGA's scoring results page for the Houston (Westwood) local qualifying tournament, where 131 golfers are competing for 8 spots in the next (sectional) qualifying stage: http://www.txga.org/18-US-Open-Local-Qua...board.html

Here's a link to the Kerrvile (Comanche Trace) scoring, where 92 golfers are competing for 5 spots in the next (sectional) qualifying stage: http://www.txga.org/18_US_Open_Local_San...board.html

Also, Mitchell has two siblings, one of whom is named McClure ("Mac") ... a freshman golfer at SMU.

A Jonathan Meissner from Wilton, CT, competed in the 2015 U.S. Open local qualifying tournament at Bethpage Red (Long Island, NY).

RE: US Open Qualifying
Looks like Rice sophomore Nick Duggan shot a 70 in San Antonio and may make it.

No the Kerrville tournament only is top 5 plus ties so Duggan won't make it. It's a good round for him though.

With 38 golfers still on the course in the Houston qualifier, Carmona is now alone in 7th place (-4), and Buttacavoli is in a 9-way tie for the 8th and final spot.

(In the event of a tie that covers the last position, there will be a sudden death playoff for the final qualifiers and two alternates.)

UPDATE (5:26 Central time): That was quick! One of the six golfers who just finished scored -5 or better. Carmona is now alone in 8th ... and hoping none of the 32 still on the course passes him ... and Buttacavoli and the other 8 at -3 are T9, looking at a chance for an alternate spot at best.

2nd UPDATE (5:29 Central time): Michael Perras (UH senior) & Wesley Short (54-year-old UT-Austin alum and PGA Tour winner in 2005) just joined Carmona at -4 (T8). Buttacavoli and others at -3 are now T11 ... and will not advance or be an alternate. 26 are golfers still on the course.

3rd UPDATE (6:20 Central time): Chance Cathey (Texas Lutheran '14) has joined the -4 T8s. Six golfers remain on the course.

Mitchell posts a -6 ... tied for the lead!!

Only 3 golfers left on the course. He'll qualify for sectionals, for sure!

WooHOO!!! WTG, Mitchell!

He tied Ben Hargis, a professional golfer from Armarillo, UNT & West Texas A&M (BS '12).

ARRRGH!!! One of the last golfers on the course, San Jose State alum (2011) Mark Hubbard, shot a no-bogey 65 (-7) to finishe T2, and knock Carmona and the other -4s out of the the top 8 finishers.

I expect that the four -4s will now compete sudden death for the two alternate spots, however.

(Hubbard is notable for having proposed to his girlfriend after finishing Pebble Beach's famed 18th hole at the 2015 AT&T Pro-Am.)

Is Julian going to make the field?

Excellent!! Hope something opens up for him.

Twelve 36-hole sectional elimination tournaments will be held on May 21 (in Japan) and June 4 (all 11 others), including at the Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Tex..

The odds of making the U.S. Open field are still very long. "Last year, 21 players advanced to the U.S. Open through open qualifying."
