It is a NCAA division III school, which is why many people outside of Illinois have maybe not heard of it. They have about 3000 undergrads, 3000 postgrads, and 1350 doctoral students.

I notice that public schools in Virginia don't always give regional names to their schools. They name them after historical figures: George Mason, Christopher Newport, William & Mary, James Madison. Sometimes they are named after the town: Radford, Longwood, Old Dominion (OK that doesn't quite fit). I think it give the sheepskin greater prestige than "Southwest Virginia State University at Radford".

How about "The University of Edwardsville"? Or they could name it after a famous Illinoisan: Carl Sandburg? Barack Obama? Bill Murray?
Cindy Crawford? How about "Belushi State University"? Or even "Faber College"?

*oops... NoDak commented before me.

Universities in Virginia are set up differently than schools in Illinois.

George Mason University's parent school, the school where I am an alum, is the University of Virginia. Christopher Newport University's parent is the College of William & Mary.

This is a very different set-up than the schools in North Carolina where each functions under the University of North Carolina system. In theory, attending the Univerity of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, Western Carolina, and North Carolina Central University are the same.

The growth of the University of Illinois-Chicago may be the reason SIU-Carbondale is at a standstill. Of course, this doesn't explain why NIU is also having declining enrollment, too.

Illinois is an exporter of college students. We may have taken over New Jersey as the largest exporter of college students. Schools like Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, etc... work this area hard. Throw in schools like Wisconsin-Whitewater, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, etc... and you can see that the Ilinois schools have done a poor job positioning their benefits to local students.

For the record, I suspect that SIU-C and SIU-E will give up control of the medical school in Springfield as part of the settlement. UIS may be the beneficiary.

I mean kinda. IDK what the GMU/UVA relationship is like, but CNU is completely separate from William and Mary at this point. CNU - and VCU and ODU - were all started as divisions of William and Mary, but have since separated and have their own Presidents, BoVs, etc.

UVA and GMU are separated and have been for a long time (the 1970's?).

I didn't know a W&M connection to VCU. VCU is an amalgam. The Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute were the universities that formed VCU. I am not aware of a connection to W&M.

My initial point is that the Commonwealth of Virginia universities are very different from how the state of Illinois organizes her university system.

We're getting way off topic form the SIU stuff, but from the article you posted:

"In 1925, the school became the Richmond Division of the College of William and Mary because of $10,000 dollars in support given to RPI each year. In the transition to becoming a public institution from 1925 to 1940, the school was one of the few "state-supported colleges" in the country operating almost entirely without state support.[5] The lack of funding was due mainly to a popular belief that Virginia already had too many public universities and that leaders in Virginia believed the only proper location for a college or university was in a small town and not in an urban environment.[6] With the support from The College of William and Mary, it acquired 827 West Franklin Street (now known as Founder's Hall)."

"In 1939 the school was renamed the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary."

Incoming students expected to freefall by 20% at SIU. They even acknowledge EIU is outplaying them.

I remember the 2000s when SIU was the party school to go to (ranked #3 by a magazine). Cleaned up their image and washed up enrollment with it
